I do not, I hasten to say, want to be unedifying on this flinty Sunday morning. But it is, I think, worth reflecting on the myriad emotions the Christmas season elicits and depends upon. One thing (not, I need hardly say, the only thing) that Christmas presupposes is a spirit of kindliness and generosity, a spirit, that is to say, of altruism. I&amp;#8217;ve had occasion to write about altruism before.
