I understand that one reason slaves were imported into the US was that the leaders of that time looked at Africa and said “Horrible what is happening there. And it’s impossible to fix the place. If we buy those people who have been captured by other tribes and bring them here they will be no worse off, at worst.”

I am not trying to justify the slave trade, but as you say, the place has been a mess for a very long time.
