A lighter note: An Irishman immigrated to New York. Every day he would stop in one bar, order two glasses of Guninness, hold one in one hand and the other in the other, clink them together, and proceed to drink alternating portions from each until they were both empty.

When asked why, he explained that he was toasting his only brother who was very ill in Ireland. Then he stopped the ritual and started having but one (larger) mug per day.

The bartender inquired if his brother had passed. “Oh no! He has made a splendid recovery. This is his glass. Me? Sure and I have given up Guinness for Lent.”
