neolex and Peterike,
Sadly, because the nation has moved to the Left (and has been moving this way, I think, since the Bush I presidency)picking a conservative, while very palatable to me, is maybe the kiss of death. I do think that when people can focus their minds on hearing what conservatism really is, and patiently hear out its advocate, that they will find that most of their lives do indeed conform to how conservatives live. And they would realize that, as Michael Savage describes it, liberalism is a mental disorder. But we are a long way from that moment.
Sadly, the Left was not discredited by the Carter presidency. Only Carter and his party were discredited, while socialist intellectuals tirelessly worked in the trenches of education and media. It is now coming to fruition. It frustrates me to see this, because I was once a part of this Gramscian march through the institutions when I was a seminarian. I eventually saw how deeply false and flawed the intellectual basis of socialism is. I saw just how completely education and media have been infected with the virus. I try to warn people that this is not me being paranoid, but those who have not been exposed to this process and do not understand what has been happening sort of brush it off as partisan posturing and rhetorical exaggeration.
What can one do?
Ideas have consequences. They also involve a narrative/discursive process. Ideas are generally not rejected by most people until their practical ramifications have been experienced and witnessed as disastrous. I fear that this is how it is going to play out, and it will cost millions of lives and severely disrupt economies.
