I know who Andrew McCarthy is (but why would I pay enough attention to Hollywood or TV to know there is an actor with the same name???) I don’t see, though, why his pronouncement on this has any authority. Yes, by all means the Jihadis themselves think that they “are indeed the true expression of Islam as it is written”. But other (non-Jihadi) Muslims may not agree, and they are by no means an empty set.
