This is like Stalin purges. Obama only won 50% of the Democrats so that is about 20% of the entire electorate. Assume 40 % democrats and 40 % Republicans and 20 % Independents. His supporters are there worst on personnel issues and just infuriate a major Democratic base.

McCain probably could not lose at this point. With the deranged “Bring back 1968” crowd outside. The total lawlessness of the Democrat Convention is scaring the rest of the country into becoming McCain’s supporters who carefully manage their egos and massage them into fundraising and supporting MCCain since he is the maverick.
