It seems to me that Obama’s lawyers are correct when they say this advertisement does not fall into the category of “issue advocacy.” Could someone here briefly explain the relevant law?
Criticizing Obama for his relationship to Ayers is fair game, but I would prefer to see the money spent on advertisements contrasting the parties’ solutions to large problems — the budget, regulation, judge nominations, and so forth.
The Obama campaign’s counter-advertisement — “With all our problems, why is John McCain talking about the ’60s, trying to link Barack Obama to radical Bill Ayers?” — will get a lot of agreement from the voters who still are undecided.
