I was told by a long time insider that the reason behind the screwup of of Denver International Airport baggage handling system was interference by then Mayor Wellington Webb who thought he was a design engineer. My source never provided details so I happily pass this along as urban legend. But I notice that a number of design firms are still recruiting for “baggage handling” designers in Denver. I couldn’t make this up if I tried.
