Your point that “People have mistakenly come to define Puritanism in purely sexual terms, and so they don’t think of Leftists as puritanical” is also dead on, I believe.

It seems to me that the Left has reduced the very concept of “freedom” to be limited strictly to uninhibited sexual license. By emphasizing “sexual freedom”, they distract from their war on actual freedoms, such as speech, religion, and the press. All those can go by the wayside.
