Is it any wonder that one of the bluest areas of the country is the part where the first European settlers were Puritan?

People have mistakenly come to define Puritanism in purely sexual terms, and so they don’t think of Leftists as puritanical. Although spiritual descendants of Calvin and Knox may no longer profess a belief in God, the desire to moralize and scold and ban remains strong.

Class clown: medieval Catholics might have been told life was a vale of tears, but at least they had plenty of saints days and holy days to celebrate (where do you think Mardi Gras comes from?) The puritans didn’t even celebrate Christmas, since they thought of it as a suspiciously Papist (and pagan) custom.
