At least in one’s efforts to understand oneself, it is probably a good idea to operate on the assumption that “reality wins,” in order to avoid as much as possible the all too common fate of repeatedly bashing one’s head against the same wall(s).
When I was in post-graduate training, as a resident at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute, a wise old psychoanalyst told me once:
Reality sucks. But it’s the only game in town.
