Thank you Wretchard, once again, for being the voice of reason and sanity. Cedarford and Russian Bear are also making sense, and even friends of Georgia can see that Saakashvili has made a reckless mistake, one that will actually hurt Georgia’s chances of joining NATO and the EU rather than help it. While I think Georgia should be given a chance to join the EU, I don’t think NATO membership is necessary or wise, anymore than it would be for Ukraine. NATO expansion should have stopped with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, in my view, and NATO itself should have been reorganized as a counter-terrorist organization inclusive of Russia rather than what it is now.
