Nice to know many of the cranks are still here, Cold Warriors and war porn addicts, and others gleefully contemplating the end of Russian cilization, as if the resulting vacuum to be filled by a Tartar branch of the Caliphate or Greater China in the Far East would be preferable to the West than the present vodka swilling, tyranny loving rabble.
On the other hand, there have been many thoughtful comments showing an ounce of sanity, or at least “we have no dog in that fight” ala James Baker. After bombing Serbia to allow Kosovo to achieve its independence, we turn around and tell the Russians that Georgia is justified in crushing little South Ossetia’s bid for the same. And the U.S. taxpayer-funded RFE/L website publishes Yulia Latyina dismissing South Ossetia as nothing more than a “terrorist state”, akin to Hezbollah’s enclave in Lebanon or the PLO, while the same Georgian soldiers attacking South Ossetia were training with U.S. Marines to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan two weeks ago. Hmmm…we’re not exactly neutral, are we? What’s next, Russian and Chinese troops training Venezuelans while Chavez cuts us completely out of their heavy oil deals, the way we cut the Russians out of Caspian oil in the 90s? Tit for tat. But who is really David and Goliath here? Russia, which nobody really seems to like, or poor little Georgia, which gets to play Goliath against poor little South Ossetia?
Makes sense to me!
