blert @ 125:

Presidio of San Francisco was founded by the Spanish in 1776. (Presidio of Monterey was founded four years later.)

In 1798, the Arguello family was given the land grant for the Rancho de Las Pulgas (“the Flea Ranch”), which comprises much of the San Francisco Peninsula. The Mission Dolores, also founded in 1776, had a farm in the Linda Mar Valley in what is today the Sanchez Adobe in Pacifica, SW of San Francisco.

The Vallejos had a huge ranch in Somoma and Marin County in the early 1800′s and the port for all their produce was San Francisco.

Nope, those Indians that survived the Europeans’ diseases were still there, but to find “wild” Indians using stone tipped weapons, you would have had to go pretty far afield by 1840. And in 1840, the people of California were citizens of Alta California, a province of Mexico.

Other than the dates though, you’re pretty much right.
