Eon #101:
“It wasn’t until the 1973 Yom Kippur War that substantial quantities of up-to-date, state-of-the-art U.S. equipment was used by the Israeli Defense Forces, notably F-4E Phantom multirole fighters, A-4 Skyhawk attack bombers ….”
The IDF got A-4′s and F-4′s from the US after the 1967 Six Day War. The F-4 was used for almost all of the long range strike missions in the 1973 Yom Kipper War and the A-4 was used extensively for close air support.
At the start of the war the IDF had 150 A-4′s, 140 F-4′s, 50 Mirage III, 8 Vatour and 12 Super Mystere.
The IDF lost 120 aircraft during the war and got at least 48 F-4E’s and as many as 80 A-4′s as replacements. The Arabs lost at least 450 aircraft.
