World War C

I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal.

The Internet is under attack.  The New York Times reported that “major websites were inaccessible to people across wide swaths of the United States on Friday after a company that manages crucial parts of the internet’s infrastructure said it was under attack. … A spokeswoman said the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security were looking into the incident and all potential causes, including criminal activity and a nation-state attack.”

in a troubling development, the attack appears to have relied on hundreds of thousands of internet-connected devices like cameras and home routers that have been infected — without their owners’ knowledge — with software that allows hackers to command them to flood a target with overwhelming traffic.

The US has more resources that malware can take over than any other country. It is sitting on the biggest “cyber powder magazine” there is. North Korea by comparison has 28 domains. Some pundits think the attacks “are just the start”.  The most important objective of the attack has already been achieved: it is to demonstrate that Americans are vulnerable.  You are not safe not even in your favorite hipster cafe.  It is to demonstrate the impotence of institutional icons and diminish their aura of power.  Obama can’t protect you.  Hillary can’t protect you.  Come to think of it she can’t even protect her own data. Another generation of Americans would have said, “oh yeah?” and plotted their response. The trouble with this generation of leaders is there’s no “oh yeah?”  There’s only “say what?”

If World War C has actually started, there may be some doubt over whether to announce it. The risk of admitting to a threat has always been regarded as provocative by this administration. They’re still trying to decide whether the USS Mason was actually attacked by missiles in the Red Sea.  And even when the administration does decide to strike back they make to sure to announce their secret, covert action in advance never thinking someone might beat them to the punch.

Hybrid warfare is powerful precisely because it attacks the weakest point in the system: the political and cultural Western elite. All those bombers, missiles, subs and fleets of stealth planes mean nothing if the people who command them can’t even decide whether they’ve been punched in the mouth. In a crisis blame Trump. Why? Because they can’t blame Putin.

The Daily Beast writes, “back in September Bruce Schneier, an internationally renowned security technologist, wrote about hackers probing the internet for points of weakness in an attempt to have the ability to take the entire net offline. A lot of people blew that article off at the time as unrealistic. That was before today’s attacks which temporarily took down some of the biggest names on the internet.”

In the light of today’s events the true magnitude, complacency and arrogance of Hillary “what with a cloth” Clinton’s bathroom email server becomes clear.

Nobody knows the trouble we’re in
Nobody knows but Jesus
Nobody knows what Putin has seen
Glory, Hallelujah

The Sinking of the Prince of Wales & Repulse: The End of a Battleship Era, By Patrick Mahoney and Martin Middlebrook.
