Chesler Chronicles

Earlier this month, I interviewed Tapan Ghosh, the founder of a Hindu resistance movement in India. He had been touring the United States in order to raise both consciousness and funding for his work. I was especially moved by his work to rescue those Hindu girls and women whom Muslims had captured, forcibly converted, force-married to Muslims as second or third wives, or trafficked into brothels all over the Middle East and Asia. His organization not only rescued more than one hundred such victims, but then also persuaded their families and villages to welcome them back. I conducted a long interview with him which I will post here at a later date.

I posted this article earlier this week and have received an amazing response. Read it, make up your own mind about whether what is happening in India could ever happen in the West.  The article begins this way:

They are crossing the border illegally and violently displacing the indigenous population whose homes and possessions they either destroy or occupy. They are attacking the young, the elderly, and especially the girls and women, whom they kidnap, forcibly convert, or traffic into brothels. The locals are terrified of them. The police rarely come to their aid, nor do the politically correct media or government. Both are terrified by the criminals and terrorists who are riding these immigrant waves.
I am not talking about illegal immigrants to Europe or North America. I am describing Muslims who are penetrating India’s West Bengal region. These Bangladeshi immigrants are becoming conduits for criminal activities (arms, drugs, and sexual slavery) which also fund global jihad.

You won’t read about this in the Western mainstream media—or even in the Indian media, which has turned a blind eye to this ongoing tragedy because they are afraid to be labeled “politically incorrect” or “Islamophobic.” They are also afraid of reprisals. When Islamic zealots ransacked the office of the renowned newspaper, ‘The Statesman’ in Kolkata, in retaliation for a mere reproduction of an article condemning Islamic extremism, the Indian press remained silent. The editor and publisher of the newspaper were arrested for offending Muslim sentiments and no action was taken against the rioters.

Fortunately, there are a few very brave Hindus who are taking a stand against the Muslim terror campaign in India. One of them is Tapan Ghosh, whom I had the privilege of meeting recently when he came to New York City to talk about anti-Hindu persecution in his homeland. In 2008, Ghosh founded “Hindu Samhati” (Hindu Solidarity Movement), which serves persecuted Hindu communities in both West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Geert Wilders, the Dutch politician who is about to stand trial for “hate speech” against Muslims, has suggested a ten-point program to save the West from being jihadically overrun.

 The times are so surreal.

Wilders, who is also due to speak on 9/11 in downtown Manhattan, near Ground Zero suggests that we must:

  1. Stop cultural relativism.  We need an article in our constitutions that lays down that we have a Jewish-Christian and humanism culture.

    2.  Stop pretending that Islam is a religion.  Islam is a totalitarian ideology.  In other words, the right to religious freedom should not apply to Islam.  “Death for Apostasy” 4:89, Sahih Bukhari

    3.  Stop mass immigration by people from Muslim countries.  We have to end Al-Hijra.

    4.  Encourage voluntary repatriation.

    5.  Expel criminal foreigners and criminals with dual nationality, after denationalization, and send them back to their Arab countries.  Likewise, expel all those who incite to a ‘violent jihad’.

    6.  We need a European First Amendment to strengthen free speech.

    7.  Have every member of a non-Western minority sign a legally binding contract of assimilation.

    8.  We need a binding pledge of allegiance in all Western countries.

    9.  Stop the building of new mosques.  As long as no churches or synagogues are allowed to be built in countries like Saudi Arabia, we will not allow one more new mosque in our western countries.  Close all mosques where incitement to violence is taking place.  Close all Islamic schools, for they are fascist institutions and young children should not be educated an ideology of hate and violence.

    10.  Get rid of the current weak leaders.  We have the privilege of living in a democracy.  Let’s use that privilege and exchange cowards for heroes.  We need more Churchills and less Chamberlains.

In short, we have to go on the offensive and start fighting back.  We must no longer allow ourselves to remain seated in our armchairs and be trampled over.  If they bombard us with Sharia law, we will bombard them back with our human rights.

Well folks: What do you think? Does this point us in the right direction or is this an abrogation of our dearest civil rights and liberties? Are we dooming ourselves by kidding ourselves about the nature of Islamism, political Islam, radical Islam—and by accepting the Muslim Islamists as if they are anti-Islamists and sidelining, rejecting the truly moderate anti-Islamist Muslims as marginal, unimportant?

Are we in a life-and-death war or are we dreaming? Does “Islamophobia” really exist or is it a non-issue, conjured-up by the Masters of Illusion, the bullies who insist they are victims?

You decide.

And, last night, someone sent me a chain letter calling for a new Constitutional Convention and a new, 28th Ammendment, which calls for a new kind of equality. Here it is:

“Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States .”

I want to thank Madeline Brooks of Act for America for sending along the Wilders points and Shira/Beth/On One Foot  for sending the proposed language of a 28th amendment.

Read Him in Huffington Post, Read my Challenge to Him Here

It was only a matter of time before someone would try to make some political hay out of the very curious obsession that the American (Arab-backed) mainstream media has with honor killings when and only when they are committed by Hindus.

And now, the Huffington Post has given none other than John Esposito the bully pulpit on this one. Professor Esposito teaches Islamic Studies at Georgetown, where he is also the founder and director of the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. (“Hath not a Jew eyes?” Why are Jews not included in this project of understanding?)

From 1988-1992, Esposito served as the president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA). Needless to say, this association is a radically left, pro-Palestinian, anti-Zionist, and anti-Semitic group. It is certainly not a feminist group. Please read Martin Kramer’s excellent book Ivory Towers on Sand, which examines MESA’s activities and point of view.

But of course, who else, who better, to speak for women? Who can better express the feminist point of view? And on an American left-liberal website?

This is precisely the high ground that Esposito seeks to claim. He is now concerned with “violence against women.” He writes:

“Gender equity and violence against women are two issues rightfully attracting more attention in the mainstream press, but in the court of public opinion, Islam is seen as an instigator of women’s oppression. Studies show that gender equity is cited as a reason for the public’s mistrust of Islam. … Such violence refers to crimes committed against females and cuts across numerous faiths, cultures and societies.”

Therefore, to redeem the honor of Islam and earn his Saudi money, Esposito describes a particular honor killing, assuming that most readers will assume that it has been committed by Muslims. But, he explains, this tragedy has been perpetrated by Hindus!:

“Women are murdered in so-called honor killings everyday, and the public has a right to know more about these crimes and their victims. Take India for example. On Saturday, the first-ever Indian Peoples’ Tribunal on so-called ‘Honour Killings’ gathered prominent lawyers and activists from major Indian non-government organizations, including the Human Right Law Network, the Women’s Legal Forum and the Women’s Christian Association of India, to raise awareness for these crimes. The event followed an incident earlier this summer when two young people from different backgrounds pledged to marry one another but were killed by their loved ones. Family members perpetrated the so-called honor killing to restore their communal standing. Some praised the murderers as heroes, and authorities treated the crime with impunity.

“Were the victims Muslim?

“No. That’s the point.”

Muslim students bully Jewish pro-Israel students on campuses all over America–and their acts of hatred, bullying, physical intimidation, actual rioting is not seen or investigated as “racism,” “hate speech”  or anti-Semitism. But when sober scholars hold a grave and reasoned academic conference about anti-Semitism at Yale (the one in which I participated), the Palestinian representative protests to the Yale administration, describing the conference as “anti-Muslim” and “anti-Arab.”

This is our Brave New World in which all pigs are not equal. Below, please find a piece I have just posted at Newsrealblog–again about TIME magazine. First, they claim that America is an “Islamophobic” country; now they claim that Israel does not want peace.

The September 13, 2010 issue of TIME Magazine arrived yesterday. The cover story is titled “Why Israel Doesn’t Care About Peace” and is illustrated by a large Jewish star composed of daisies. Yes, daises—as in “counting daisies, don’t have a care in the world.”

This is precisely the point of Karl Vick’s article. He writes:

Israelis are no longer preoccupied with the matter [of peace with the Palestinians]. They’re otherwise engaged: They’re making money; they’re enjoying the rays of the late summer … they have moved on.

Vick quotes an Israeli real estate agent in Ashdod, one Eli, who tells him:

People are indifferent. They don’t care if there’s going to be war. They don’t care if there’s going to be peace. They don’t care. They live in the day.

According to Vick, Israelis don’t care about peace, peace negotiations, or about the Palestinians because they are simply having too good a time: sunbathing, swimming, café-hopping, profiting from start-up companies, and, according to polls cited by Vick, utterly disconnected from “politics;” indeed Vick suggests that Israelis resemble Californians more than they resemble Egyptians. These are all points which scream: Israel does not fit in; if Israelis were only more impoverished, more indolent, and paradoxically, even more “laid back,” they might be recognizable as indigenous to the region, a true part of the Middle East.

These are Vick’s thoughts, not mine.

Of course, Jews are the original Palestinians and the most indigenous of the region’s inhabitants; yes, there are many impoverished Israelis, both Jews and non-Jews; and, let’s not forget that there are even some Israelis who remain permanently on high alert for the next terrorist attack, permanently scarred by the last ones. For a moment, let’s forget about all that. Allow me to ask: Why doesn’t Vick also point out that Palestinians are leading the high life on the West Bank and in sumptuous villas on both the West Bank and in Gaza; that they, too, are sunbathing, swimming, shopping, dining out, and relaxing at the beach—at least as much as the Islamist thugs who run the lives of Palestinians will allow it?

The Jew-haters hate and the Jews (and our non-Jewish friends) analyze and document that hatred. The Jew-haters blow Jews up and we grapple with the nature of evil. Thus, at the end of Dr. Richard Landes’s powerful presentation, he said: “They’re gonna schecht (slaughter) us. We have to do something.” I, as the moderator, then said, with a rueful smile: “And therefore, what we will do is listen to our next sobering speaker, Dr. Alvin Rosenfeld, who will now further our understanding of the Jewish and Jewish Israeli role in the demonization of Israel.” Of course, I said it to break the audience’s hush, shock, sorrow—and it did, we all laughed and continued.

Yale University’s Initiative for the Interdisciplinary Study of Antisemitism hosted a major conference in which I was privileged to be a participant. “Global Antisemitism: A Crisis of Modernity” was envisioned by Professor Charles Asher Small who founded the Initiative. The conference was also sponsored by the Issac and Jessie Kaplan Center for Jewish Studies and Research, University of Cape Town, in association with the Vidal Sasoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism, Hebrew University, Jerusalem; the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism, Tel Aviv University; The Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism, Indiana University; and the Rabin Chair Forum, George Washington University.

My plenary panel was the only panel which focused on women and anti-Semitism. It was chaired by Jerusalem based scholar, Jennifer Roskies. My co-panelists included Thyme Siegel, whose speech was titled: “Sisterhood was powerful and Global. Where Did it Go?” and Dr. Nora Gold whose speech was titled: “Fighting Anti-Semitism in the Feminist Community.”

We had the very best time when we met the previous afternoon. Thyme, Nora, and I go back, way back, to the 1960s in feminist America. These days, Thyme, an independent researcher and Women’s Studies teacher, is holding an Israeli flag at Berkeley when her former friends stand holding a Palestinian flag; she has come a long, long way from her matriarchal, lesbian separatist days in Eugene, Oregon. Dr. Nora Gold is using her Toronto-based research to educate feminists about racism against Jews. She is often successful. I look forward to working with them and with our very gracious Chair Jennifer, soon again.

Make no mistake. Others also enjoyed what we had to say and indeed, said the most complimentary things to us afterward. This is no small feat given the greats who were in attendance. I want to thank both Jennifer Roskies and Charles Small for this amazing opportunity.

The History and Psychological Roots of Anti-Semitism Among Feminists, Their Gradual Palestinianization and Stalinization

YALE AUGUST 25, 2010

By Phyllis Chesler

Four score and ten years ago women won the right to vote in the United States. And thirty years ago, in 1980, I stood with the Israeli delegation in Copenhagen at the United Nations conference on women—the true precursor of the anti-Zionist conference in Durban in 2001. Twenty-nine years ago, right here in Connecticut, at the University at Storrs, I convened a panel at the annual convention of the National Women’s Studies Association to challenge American feminists about both their anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.

I had been doing this since the early 1970s but even I could not have predicted the rapid and extreme Stalinization and Palestinianization that would take place among academics and activists in general. I could never have imagined that the western intelligentsia, the “good” people, including feminists, would make so tragic an alliance with Islamic barbarism and misogyny.

Tales From The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post

Four young civilians — human beings, fathers, mothers, one of whom was also pregnant, collectively the parents of seven children — were brutally gunned down by armed, masked terrorists. Their murders were openly celebrated in the streets by their attackers and by thousands of their supporters.

You would think that the world would recoil in horror — or that those who report the news, worldwide, would do so. Think again. These four precious souls were Israeli “settlers” and, as such, have already been so demonized that they are now seen as having provoked their bloody, pitiless deaths.

First, they came for the settlers. Then, they came for the secular Israeli pro-peace demonstrators in Jerusalem, Haifa, and Tel Aviv. And then they came for ….you and me.

Predictably, sadly, my three local area New York City newspapers present this tragic news in very different ways.

Allow me to first quote from the Bible of the intelligentsia, aka the New York Times, which presents this incident on page 4, not on page 1; the early pages are usually reserved for all incidents in which Israelis fight back so that Israeli “evil” is seen immediately and framed as among the most “important” world news of the day. The accompanying Times headline? Unbelievably, it is this: “Killing of 4 Israeli Settlers on the Eve of Peace Talks Rattles Leaders on Both Sides.” It’s really not clear who killed the “settlers.”  What is clear is that “both sides” are “rattled.” The piece opens with a paragraph that made me see red, both literally and metaphorically. It reads as follows:

“The killing of four Israeli settlers, including a pregnant woman, in the West Bank on Tuesday evening rattled Israeli and Palestinian leaders on the eve of peace talks in Washington and underscored the disruptive role that the issue of Jewish settlements could play in the already fragile negotiations.”

Note: This opening paragraph literally blames the past and future peace failures on the Israeli settlements. The Times neither blames nor characterizes Hamas accurately. It does not say the Arab Muslim terrorist group, Hamas — the Palestinian version of the Muslim Brotherhood in Gaza, probably also backed by Iran and Hezbollah, and the group which is claiming responsibility for the attack — is also responsible for a deadly civil war with the not-so-moderate President Abbas; an Islamist war on Palestinian women, homosexuals, and dissidents; and a jihadic war against the Jews, which began a long time ago and which will never stop until either such terrorist leaders and their propaganda are utterly vanquished militarily or until the Jews have been driven out of the Holy Land once again.

On the contrary. The piece also positions President Mahmud Abbas as the “good” guy who, like his negotiating partner, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has “condemned” the attacks. Yes — even as Abbas is busy honoring the Palestinian terrorist who planned the Munich massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic games, Amin Al-Hindi, as well as the Palestinian terrorist Omar Muhammad Ziyada, who murdered an Israeli civilian in a human bomb homicide in 2002.

The Gray Lady does not even tell us the names of the Israeli civilian victims, nor are they in any way humanized. Their histories are not presented. They are only “particularly militant settlers”: faceless, shadowy figures. We are not supposed to care about them. We do learn what Hamas said about the attack, namely that it was a “natural response to the crimes of the Israeli occupation and its settlers.” We also learn that “hundreds” of Hamas supporters “took to the streets … to celebrate the news of the attack.”

Shame on you, Isabel Kershner and Mark Landler (who share this byline of infamy), and shame on your editors.

Islamist Aggressors Are Really the Victims

August 26th, 2010 - 8:19 am

Things are getting ugly and more surreal far more swiftly than anyone thought possible.

Just today, roving male vigilante squads are menacing women in Chechnya for not wearing headscarves during Ramadan; they are attacking women verbally, punching them, spraying them with paintballs, and taunting them with automatic rifles.

So much for those who insist that wearing a headscarf or a face veil are free “choices” and have no consequences for those who do not exercise the same “choice.”

Is this the same Russian province that was once ruled by Catherine the Great, the woman who sought to emulate French and European Enlightenment values? Is this even the same bloody Russia that once sought to elevate women, however drearily, into the Soviet Party, the Russia in which women became tractor drivers, factory forewomen, doctors, lawyers, high-level apparachniks, engineers, magnificent ballet stars and athletes?

I think not.

Is Time a Muslim Magazine?

August 24th, 2010 - 11:59 am

I did not think that the pro-Muslim/pro-Islamist and anti-Western propaganda could get any worse—and yet it just has.

Time magazine has an August 30 cover story titled “Is America Islamophobic?” Within, the article is titled: “Islam in America: It’s part of the fabric of life, but protests reveal a growing hostility to the religion of Muslims.”

President Obama’s rather strange assertions that “seven million” Muslims live in America (only 2.5-3 million actually do), and that “Islam has always played a role in America,” actually contradict the point of this piece, but no matter.

One might wonder why any “hostility” to a productive, historically significant Muslim presence in America exists. Time magazine does not tell us.

The article portrays Muslims as innocent victims and American non-Muslims as prejudiced racists who, historically, once banned Catholicism, tried to limit immigration, burned African-American churches, passed anti-Chinese legislation, criminalized certain Native-American rituals (polygamy, rejection of modern medicine), spawned the Ku Klux Klan, failed to elect a Catholic president until 1960, allowed Father Coughlin’s anti-Semitic, pro-Nazi rants to appear over the airwaves, and interned 120,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans during World War Two. This is all contained in Time’s “Brief History of Intolerance in America.”

This article could easily appear in an Egyptian or Syrian magazine; however it would be Israel that would be blamed for various alleged atrocities, and Palestinians, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood, and even al-Qaeda who would be seen as the innocent victims.

Time magazine does not balance out their history of American intolerance with a history of American tolerance, which included separating the state from religion, reforming religions, instituting a tradition of free speech, fighting a bloody Civil War in order to free the slaves, giving women the vote and educational opportunities, freeing Europe from Nazi fascist rule and waging a Cold war against Soviet totalitarianism.

Also missing in the Time magazine article is the fact that Muslim leaders, in the name of Islam, have behaved very badly and for a very long time. Missing is an equal history of Muslim countries which have practiced colonialism, imperialism, forced conversions, slavery (which is still practiced), and a far more barbaric mistreatment of non-Muslims infidels.

Muslim leaders, in the name of Islam, killed and forcibly converted Hindus in India for 800 years. They are still persecuting them; they have also destroyed the Christian Church in the Middle East and Central Asia—it is no more. In its place are only mosques and minarets where once only churches stood. Muslims vanquished Zorastrianism and Buddhism, and both exiled and genocidally exterminated Jews, Armenians, and Greeks. According to Israeli historian, Benny Morris, the Arab 1948 war against Israel must now also be understood as a religious holy war, a jihad, one that is still ongoing (“The 1948 War Was an Islamic Holy War,” Middle East Quarterly, Summer 2010).

Yesterday, I appeared on Fox News’ The Strategy Room to discuss a recent stoning in Afghanistan and the issue of stoning in general. Kimberly Guilfoyle interviewed me both skillfully and graciously. The subject is a very distressing and somewhat mysterious one for most westerners.

What does it mean when a mob of men, numbering anywhere from 50 to 200, stone a female child to death — as happened in October of 2008 in Somalia? That poor soul was not only a 13-year-old child, she had also just been raped. Indeed, that was her sole “crime” and the reason for her torture-execution. She was forced into a hole and buried nearly up to her neck. She took a long time to die and kept crying out for her life. In addition to the 50 active stoners, 1000 more men cheered them on.

What does this tell us?

First, that barbarians are mainly cowards who do not view themselves as  responsible for their actions. Everyone is the murderer and therefore, no one is the murderer. The group both absorbs and atones for any possible guilt or hesitation that even one individual might have felt. However, as we shall see, there is also another way of looking at this.

For a culture presumably so concerned with “honor,” so consumed with concepts of responsibility towards the family, clan, or “ummah” (Muslim people), those who stone a living being to death utterly shrink from any individual responsibility for carrying out their bloody deeds. Entire families become conspirators in an honor killing; village and religious councils collaborate to issue a death sentence; Muslim men sexually harass women in the streets (of Egypt) — and  in large mosque-inflamed mobs (in Algeria).

In terms of stoning, which is primarily a contemporary Muslim-only custom, not only do cowardly men hide behind each other, clearly they lack the ability to act as individuals. That power is reserved for one man, one leader, one ruling cabal only. In Afghanistan, the Taliban hooligans threw the first stones.

BREAKING NEWS:

I will be discussing this case and the issue of stoning on FOX’s internet live stream channel: “The Strategy Room” later this morning at 11:30am est–11:55am est. Kimberly Gilfoyle will be my host.

Even the New York Times got it right and put the news on their front page. The Afghan Taliban is back in business, and they just ordered two hundred men to stone two human beings to death for the crime of loving each other and wanting to marry. The all-male mob happily obliged them and included the couple’s closest relatives and neighbors.

Amazingly, the Newspaper of Record does not use the word “Muslim.” They refer to “religious authorities,” “a religious court,” and to “religious scholars,” but they name no  religion. Is it Buddhism, perhaps, which once flourished widely in Afghanistan? Or is the unnamed religion paganism, perchance? Alexander the Great, for example, was a proud pagan, and he cut through Afghanistan on his way to India, leaving shamanistic and pagan practices in his wake. The Sassanids, who once also ruled in Afghanistan, were Zoroastrians.

Afghanistan, once the crossroads of the world, was not a Muslim country until Arab Muslims colonized the entire Middle East and Central Asia by the sword from the seventh century on; the bloody, proselytizing task was completed by the tenth century. Islam is now the religion which rules Afghanistan, the very religion which the New York Times does not name.

This omission is ridiculous since everyone knows that the Taliban are Muslims, and indeed they (and their counterparts in Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, North Africa, Malaysia, and the Arab Middle East) all increasingly claim that stonings, beheadings, amputations, floggings, acid attacks, and nose and ear cutting are allowed or even commanded when Muslims, especially Muslim girls and women (sometimes men, especially if they are “out” Western-style homosexuals), defy some cultural, tribal, or religious norm — that Muslim “honor” demands such punishments.

Some say that such practices are not — or even if they are, should not be — Islamic practices and that one must use Islamic sources in order to reform and modernize a desert-based seventh-century religion. They may have a point — but Western governments are not helping such a Reformation project when they support and hire smooth and deceptive Islamists who are not pro-Western but who are, rather, in sympathy with the Taliban  in some ways. Why not turn to the real moderate Muslims who are anti-Islamists and allow them to “speak for” the Muslim Street? This is what the contributors to Zeyno Baran’s excellent collection, The Other Muslims: Moderate and Secular, implore. This is precisely why you should read Zuhdi Jasser’s piece on the proposed mosque at Ground Zero.

Some say that we cannot eliminate the concept of honor but that we must, instead, replace one concept of honor with another. Kwame Anthony Appiah suggests just this in his new book, The Honor Code: How Moral Revolutions Happen. He believes that the practices of dueling, the Atlantic slave trade, and Chinese foot-binding changed when people’s attitudes towards them changed.  “Honor must be turned against honor killing.”  Thus, people — outsiders and dissidents — must educate people about the dishonorable nature of honor killings.
