OMG!!! As one who loves history & also feels there are lessons for all in history, I was astonished to read through this incredible, yet unfortunately incomplete list of terrorist acts. Racism is wrong. Bias is wrong. Yet logic must prevail in life. Its called reality. And the reality of our situation is, many human beings have lost their lives or have been maimed or injured by, Muslim male extremist(s) between the age of 17 and 40, over the past 40 + years.
I am confident one could also assign attacks to those of other persuasions, religious, political, national, etc., but….. this list surely must cause some to seriously think about their opposition to profiling to stop acts of terrorism.

MOST SUICIDE BOMBERS ARE SECULAR
Robert Pape of the University of Chicago ran a study that analyzed every suicide bombing from 1980 to 2003. The study was conducted by the Chicago Project on Suicide Terrorism, funded in part by the Pentagon Defense Threat Reduction Agency. The intial results were published in a paper in the American Political Science Review, and the complete results in a book called “Dying to Win”. Pape studied 461 suicide attacks overall, which is every suicide attack from 1980 to 2003. He ascertained the religious or ideological affiliation of 384 of them:
“Of the 384 attackers for whom we have data, 166, or 43%, were religious, while 218, or 57%, were secular.”
These results were mirrored by work published in a book called “Making Sense of Suicide Missions”, edited by Deigo Gambetta, who found that “contrary to a widespread belief, the majority of [suicide missions] have been carried out by secular rather than religious organizations.”
The most prolific suicide bombers are the LTTE. They are not Muslim.

The LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) are not secular. Their suicide bombings were part of a war with a specific goal: an independent Tamil state in Sri Lanka. They did not engage in suicide bombings that could not have helped their cause in any conceivable way. This is very different from 9/11, the London subway bombings, etc., which were done becuase they were considered virtuous, beautiful things to do by the perpetrators, who shouldn’t have been surprised that 9/11 led to the overthrow of the Taliban government of Afghanistan.

A suicide attack is when you plan out an attack, knowing beforehand that you will die as a result. Killing yourself to avoid capture is something different. The earliest know suicide attacks were committed by the Jewish Zealots 2,000 years ago. Suicide attacks in recent times started with the Russian revolutionaries at the end of the nineteenth century.

Dr Chesler, in the assumption that you are a neutral observer, I’m surprised that these listed atrocities inflame your sense of morality to a greater degree than, say, the more recent case of the 100,000 innocent civilians killed (a conservative estimate) during the illegal unilateral invasion of Iraq. Many of those victims were killed by bullets and explosives as in your examples, but perhaps you feel they were murdered “righteously”?
Furthermore, during the same period in history as most of your expostulations, sanctions imposed upon Iraq (mostly at the behest of the United States) resulted in serious shortages of food, clean water and medicine, culminating in over one million fatalities (again a conservative estimate), mainly children under the age of five.

I must have missed alot of bombings when making this list, huh? Because if this is all there is, I could match that in Islamic suicide attacks within the past year (I could probably double or triple it in that time frame). Many of these suicide attacks were in conjunction with larger operations. Also note that many of these attacks are specifically targeting government officials, and to a lesser extent government facilities and foot soldiers. Those are just two differences between the LTTE and Islamic terrorists. When the LTTE wants large civilian casualties, they prefer to utilize their infantry to perpetrate massacres with guns and swords. They have killed thousands in this manner. Here’s my source:
