Krauthammer’s self-contradictory attempt at justifying the notion that America owns the world is just another piece of evidence that the conservative movement has lost all contact with reality. First he claims nothing is inevitable, and in the next paragraph he cites an example of inevitable decline. He couldn’t be less coherent if he tried.

The moral leadership America offers the world is in the ideas and ideals that we embody – we lost our role as the world’s moral leader by violating our own standards, and the only way to rebuild American prestige is to return to the truths upon which our country was founded.

This kind of hand-wringing is expected from folks like Krauthammer, who really have no deep appreciation for American values.
