And, as I watch documentaries and videos in which Arab and Muslim women argue in favor of womens’ subordinate status, I can’t help but note how very angry and aggressive these women in head and shoulder scarves are—how filled with hate they are for those women who seek women’s elevation within the mosque. But also, their affect, even their rage, seems dead, flat, as if they are following a script that has been brutally drummed into them all their lives. (There is an important PBS feature due out in June which documents Asra Nomani’s struggle to elevate Muslim women. It is titled The Mosque in Morgantown and will air on June 15th, 2009.)
Now, back to the Ottawa trial. This tragic murder seems to fit my profile of a classical honor killing which I outlined in my study, published in the Middle East Quarterly, MEQ. A relatively young Muslim girl, who is perceived as too westernized, too “happy,” too independent, too ambitious, is, therefore, perceived as dishonoring her family who, to cleanse their shame, kill her. The father, a brother, a male cousin, with help from the family’s women, carry out this cruel deed. In the West, fathers, brothers, and male cousins, do not usually kill their daughters or sisters. Sometimes, in the West, adult male intimates who batter their adult wives may end up killing them but fathers rarely do so; even battering husband rarely do so.
In the spring of 2008, in Henrietta, New York, another Afghan brother, Waheed Allah Mohammed, goaded by his mother, stabbed his sister Fauzia many times. Her crime? She was too “western” in her clothing choice, and she planned to leave the family home in upstate New York to attend college in New York City. Waheed described her as a “bad Muslim girl.” Luckily, Fauzia lived. Her brother will stand trial and, in my opinion, her mother should be indicted as well as a co-conspirator.
One honor murder, one attempted honor murder: Both perpetrated by Afghan Muslims. Yet, my Afghan friends assure me that honor killings are foreign to Afghanistan. Perhaps they are right. Perhaps it is a matter of definition. Many Muslims, including Afghans, as well as everyone else, (especially if they themselves are modern, sophisticated, educated, “westernized”), do not often acknowledge that the traditional indignities visited upon Afghan and Muslim women in which women are sacrificed, bit by bit, all throughout their lives, are tantamount to a long drawn out human sacrifice.
Thus, neither the burq’a nor the chador, polygamy nor arranged marriage, the habit of savagely demeaning and physically battering a wife—none are necessarily considered as related to femicide, which an honor killing surely is.
Perhaps the Arab/Al-Qaeda influence in Afghanistan and living in an era of global jihad have endangered Afghan and Muslim women even further. But how are we to understand honor killings in Canada and in the United States, in Ottawa, Henrietta, and Buffalo, where, in 2009, long time Pakistani immigrant, Muzammil Hassan, beheaded his wife Aasiya?
Will someone argue that the stress of immigration made these men murder? Even when the new country is far safer and filled with many more opportunities than the old country ever was? Or, will someone argue that alleged racism in the New World “provokes” bestial, barbaric behavior among Muslim (and sometimes, far more rarely, Sikh) families? Even when the New World frees people from the caste, class, and tribal rivalries that would mean constant warfare in the Old Country? Or is the sudden shock of immigration enough to plunge people back into barbarism? But, according to the National Post, Hasibullah came here when he was quite young. Perhaps Canadian laws which allowed an abusive father to nevertheless retain custody of children are to blame. Hasibullah was both abused by and yet modelled himself after an abusive paternal role model. Psychology 101.
Where can these young Muslim women turn in the New World that will keep them safe from their own families? Can we educate domestic jihadists here?
Unless we address the root cause of this, it is first Muslims and then non-Muslims (in the Western World). What is happening to them will extend to us. There is a great need to reform Islam and no one is talking about it except few.

As a Yoga teacher I published an article about a Yogist view on the Israel / Arab conflict where I used the concept of Satya to describe those who fit the reality into their perception instead of the other way around. What these Muslim girls need to do is what any girl in an abusive relationship needs to do: Get the hell out of that life any way they can, find a real man, and start a family that nurtures freedom & love. This piece raises more starkly the issue of delusional thinking refracted by cultural practices. Which comes first the chicken or the egg? In other words: Sadiqi will argue that the alleged “dishonor” his sister brought upon her family by choosing her own husband was a “provocation.”
The “provocation” in this case makes as much sense as the “provocation” that caused Abdul Salam, who was “posing as an unthreatening Afghan citizen,” to throw a bucket of fuel on Paula Loyd, an anthropologist, and then set her on fire last November.
Until the West understands the mindset and reacts accordingly, we will continue to lose the broader war against lunatics like Sadiqi and Salam. Fortunately, In Salam’s case, Don Ayala, a former Army Ranger, took immediate action and obtained justice for Loyd, receiving probation for his actions. Can we honestly say Khatera will receive the same justice from a Canadian court?
This suggests that he wanted to assassinate her way of thinking; it also suggests that this was a political execution.

Another example of a case that shows the dangers of privileging motives, either by the prosecution or the defense. This man does not deserve to have his own motives elevated in court, either as a defense or as a tool for enhancing his sentence: doing either only reinforces the power of such beliefs. Better than he be treated like a common murderer, which he is.
Outside the courtroom is another story, for tracking and prevention of such crimes requires comprehension of what is at stake — nobody untangles these threads better than Dr. Chesler. But equality in the eyes of the law for all victims of all crimes, regardless of motive, does more to defuse the power of prejudices than all the in-court social engineering we have today, which is also too easily manipulated and politicized.
The first thing the “civilized” world must and can easily do is to:
1. Inflict the harshest of punishment upon these men who kill. A murder is a murder. “provocation” due to an ideology has no logical right to exist in western societies. Clear self-defense, of a physical kind ought be the ONLY provocation which a defense atty should be allowed to use in a client behalf. 2. Get rid of the god-awful political correctness that divides and harms all of us. For there to be given even the slightest consideration to the nonsense that is Sharia Law within the UK justice system proves that the powers that be in the UK have lost their minds, intellectual dignity AND balls to Islam and to what unholy purpose? Do they care, at all, about the reaction of their Western neighbors and legal system, or are they so focused on what their uneducated local imam and the aunties back home think that they just overlook the consequences?
Finally, I wonder in how many of these cases, the murderous father or son (or even uncle) has been having incestuous sex with the unwilling girl relative for years, and part of the rage involved is very simply that of a scorned lover.

Interesting point for discussion as (at least) 90% of murders between the opposite sex is either about money, jealosy OR sex. You have to understand, there will be a general disbelief of the “honor killing” aspect. No, they will say, this was merely an act of anger, common to all people of all cultures, and it has nothing to do with the beautiful, tolerant, understanding, peaceful Islam. Learned commentators and the general press will instill this attitude into all reporting and ignore any comment blaming this murder on the killer’s beliefs as Islamophobic. There is another explanation. Those honor killings are rare because those women already accept their second class citizen status. When practically all women in backward villages accept the prohibitions (wearing “revealing” dresses, talking to men, etc.) and accept that they must be chaperoned, that they must not be highly educated and have “men’s jobs”, there is no need to “honor” murder them. Thus, “honor” murders aren’t widespread in Pakistan and Afghanistan. But they happen because some women won’t accept the status quo. They may be more evident in the West since those women see the society outside their culture where women can achieve their dreams and they want the same thing. And because Westerners make a big deal of these crimes.

I can’t speak for this particular incident, but I’ve read of many other instances in Canada where they’re far too willing to take into consideration the cultural proclivities of the persons involved in determining outcomes. That certain parts of Canada would even consider, as they have in the past, allowing Sharia Law to play a role in civil disputes sets off alarm bells. Just putting it to a vote is inconceivable.

No. In their minds, it’s justified and their imprisonment is viewed as being wrongly convicted. It’s not “his” fault. It’s “her” fault for not accepting her place.
The main point in this case is that Sadiqi committed two counts of first degree murder of which he is charged and for that he hopefully will be sentenced to life in prison. The argument of provocation (in this case the defense of sharia) has no place in any Canadian courtroom.
All are equal, but some are more equal than others. It is time for the pussy-footing to stop, and make sure that the Sons of Allah experience

4) This is what is called in Yoga the Vedantic Realization, which has at its core the Vedantic concept of the Mayavada, meaning the world, Maya, is an illusion, and that Reality, Brahman, the Atman, only is. It comes with the realization of the Quiet, Featureless Brahman, and the personal Atman as not different from Brahman.
5) An anecdote: The greatest Indian Yogi of the 20th century, Sri Aurobindo, before taking up Yoga, was distrustful of the Mayavada because he thought it required to retire from the world and become a renunciant or Sannyasi (he was then an active politician). To his great surprise, after meeting his first and only Guru in 1907, Maharashtrian Yogi Vishnu Bhaskar Lele, who simply instructed him to meditate and stop thoughts coming from outside and watch the mind, in 3 days he got the whole enchilada, totally shed the ego, was a witness to the unreality of the material world that passed by him like shadows. Luckily, he understood that this is not the ONLY REALIZATION in Yoga, even though for many is enough, tops, and they leave family and friends, but Sri Aurobindo plodded ahead and mapped the consciousness of Yoga in a way it had never been done before, not even in Vedic India.

No, I don’t suggest this, but I think we cannot prevent these so-called honour crimes in our midst–in the heart of civilization–by merely carrying out our current laws strictly, though this must be done. But we have to find ways of making it so uncomfortable and spiritually unbearable for the criminals, that they will have to hesitate.
I do think too that a lot of education has to be done with military, police and judicial officers to make them fully aware of the kinds of crimes they are dealing with, the nature of the persons committing these crimes, and the religious and tribal forces that motivate these criminal acts.

To most of the comments left above mine. I am the victims family and its been more then 2 years since the horific tragedy of killing two innocnet engaged couple,but yet i am in a state of shock. Just want to clarify the fact that, the accused killer who has committed this haneous crime is only muslim by name, he might not even know his existence and the creator who has created him. I am sure he doesnt know how to pray either, so is such person is called muslim? Islam has never encouraged and never will to committ murder. Actually, Allah doesn’t allow eunuchs into Paradise, so maybe the threat of castration just before their (natural?) death would make a better deterrent for so-called honour killers.

I would just like to clarify a few things.
Honour killings are cultural, not religious.
Islam forbids honour killings. It is not an “Islamic act”, nowhere in the Qura’an does it say that. Murder, by any name, is one of the biggest sins in Islam.
“Whoso slayeth a believer of set purpose, his reward is Hell for ever. Allah is wroth against him and He hath cursed him and prepar…ed for him an awful doom.” (An-Nisa’: 93)
The only reason why people say it’s an Islamic Act, is because they want to make themselves believe it is. It’s stupid Mullah’s who read and each the Qura’an, not even knowing what they are saying (translation) and not even pronouncing it properlly.
It was Hassib’s father that taught him Honour killings are okay according to Islam, and that he needs to bring back the lost honour. And it was Hassib’s mistake for not researching this himself, and if he had thought before he acted, no doubt would he find that any murder (especially of a Muslim) is 100% haram (a sin).
Allah (swa) has a special punishment for those people.

Since I’m already here defending Islam,
I would just like to say Islam does not allow beating of a wife, sister, mother etc.
If a husband is upset with his wife, there is a procedure he needs to follow.
(a) admonition and advice, by explaining the unlawfulness of rebellion, its harmful effect on married life, and by listening to her viewpoint on the matter;
(b) if admonition is ineffectual, he keeps from her by not sleeping in bed with her, by which both learn the degree to which they need each other;
(c) if keeping from her is ineffectual, it is permissible for him to hit her if he believes that hitting her will bring her back to the right path, though if he does not think so, it is not permissible. His hitting her may not be in a way that injures her, meaning he may not (bruise her), break bones, wound her, or cause blood to flow.
(d) if the disagreement does not end after all this, each partner chooses an arbitrator to solve the dispute by settlement, or divorce.
Think of how lightly you would have to hit a women, so that you do not bruise her, or put marks on her skin.
This means you can tap her, and not even repeatidly.
I hope this brights a little more light to true Islam.
Islam means peace.
This is like the excuse that people use the term Jihad to kill, when really Jihad is a religious struggle with yourself.
I completely understand why people have the wrong notion of Islam. But it is not fair to be judged on uneducated people. These are the actions of people who were taught wrong, by people who don’t know what they are talking about. Yes, I am Afghan, and yes sometimes the way some Afghan’s think upset me, if they only educated themselves with the right resources, our country and religion would have so much more respect.
RIP Khatera Jaan and Feroz Jaan. You are missed, and it’s a great tragedy that the world is now without you.
