This was indeed a very fine analysis. Just one critique:

> "all Hamas needs is ONE devastating strike on an Israeli position, for one IED (improvised explosive device) to take out a team, or for one tank to be blown up, and they have acquired victory. We knew from the start of an operation like this that we were eventually going to pull out and they only needed ONE story that they could tell after we were gone.">

The one story Hamas could tell was via pictures of children on stretchers. Whether they were real or staged, they had some pictures, which affects the world's opinion. What is more important to Hamas, victory, or showing how "evil" Israel is.

Also, I'm not so sure whether Hamas's blowing up a tank would've "acquired victory." After all, they could simply lie about it and achieve the same result.

Still, it was a very fine article, Ariel!

I regret that I must disagree with Seigelman. We are losing the war against Islam and barbarianism precisely because we have abandoned the tactics of world war 2 and before. Japan and Germany were defeated not on the battle field but because we annihilated the civilian populations of Dresden, Cologne , Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We used conventional forces to keep their forces occupied and then we dropped bombs everywhere we wished. We broke the back of the civilians. We killed their women and children. Sherman said it best.War is hell. It needs to be ended quickly and decisively.Because we will not do that,in recent history in Vietnam, and today in Iraq and Afghanistan we will lose. You want to win. Break the backbone of the civilian population and wipe out the next generation. Otherwise we will lose. I respect the author's training and expertise but his initial premise is totally wrong and will lead us down the path of defeat. We must return to the tactics of world war two and realize that the death of a culture of death now will save the lives of millions in the future. We must make the choice. We fought fanatical kamikazes willing to die to take out as many of our soldiers as they could before sacrificing themselves before. These are no different. What is different is the rules of engagement. We are using modern rules not the world war 2 rules. Those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it> 'Nuff said! Enola Gay
