It enrages me that a comparison is made so readily. I have struggled to clearly articulate my perception of the radical difference between the two instances and you have put it in a nutshell. For which I am grateful. This is wonderful. If someone identifies themselves as a member of a such and such class called "Exploited Identity class" that's enough to establish them as a "reliable" source. Why ask your contacts later at the bar about the source, why do any fact checking: they look the part and their well rehersed ramble practically writes the story for you. After all, that ethics rubbish is relative and why should I doubt an "eyewitness" source! It doesn't matter that he was fauxtographed 3 months earlier with his dying son in his arms. This is "breaking news!" Oh, right this happens in those shoddy rags. Chesler spends one afternoon and finds, not one, not two, but three pieces in the NYT's that practice this one sided slip shod reportage and one other article attempts to correct this. Thanks for confirming my decision of a year ago to quit my subscription to the NYT after being a faithful buyer for 40 years. Yes, the pangs of wanting that charming crossword puzzle every Sunday hit me at around 9:30 A.M., but we can always substitute another vice when necessary. Not truly a vice, but the Claremont and Commentary book reviews are an improved substitute. And the NY Post has a Soduko and better sports page. Meanwhile, I can tell myself that I have ceased contributing $4-$5 weekly to an institution dedicated to the death of me and my family.
