I agree with your observations, except with the one about the Northern Alliance. That was only a text-book move you do everytime you go on war in foerigner lands. It’s not that the enemy of your enemy is friend, no, it’s the enemy of your enemy is just another strategic asset to be used. If USA goes to war on Iranian lands, should be to destroy all its government, during the process all the opposition groups inside Iran would jump in the same wagon thus helping the Amercan cause. Similar things have been done many times in the history including the American war against the pirats in Algers, Tunis and Tripoli. Just an asset, not that the Northern Alliance was morally equivalent to America and thus deserving our help.
