It does sound like every other country is against the US. Not something that is true, considering that 1)people like tourists, and 2) countries like investments (and there's no better investment than a friendly tourism industry). We just have to choose who we deal with, but we're NOT that limited.

Great blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers? I'm planning to start my own site soon but I'm a little lost on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I'm completely overwhelmed .. Any tips? Thank you!

Sen. McCarthy was a lot of things. A drunk and he had other issues

He was a heroin addict. Protected by Harry Anslinger and given his heroin by the good Harry to prevent a scandal.

Mr. Ledeen,

Evidently you are unaware of American Alcohol Prohibition. So let me give you a short version: criminals were driven out of the alcohol business by legalizing the production and distribution of alcohol.

Even decriminalizing users (they were never criminalized during alcohol prohibition) has positive effects. See the results Portugal got from their 2001 decriminalization. No increase of use. Fewer deaths.

The irony here is that if Obama would take the right action re: Iran by merely employing the bully pulpit to speak over the Mullahs directly to the people, perhaps move a few assets into the region to indicate that he means business, and the Regime would topple like overripe fruit. Obama would then be free to set his agenda well past 2012, as his re-election would be assured.
Instead, he is willing to give the regime the room it needs to crush dissent, making ony what he deems appropriate noises about "the world standing as one" to condemn such harsh treatment.
The sooner the better, in his mind; so that he will then be free to unleash the 'O' charm on Admadinejad, disarming the suspicious Islamic leader by apologizing for the sins of Eisenhower.
Similarly, he seeks to win over Chavez by bullying Honduras into taking back Zelaya, and isolating our ally Columbia.

lawrence Kohn @ 14:

Very good synopsis of the current situation. Those who think the Communists and Marxists just magically went away in the late 80's and early 90's engage in just that, magical thinking.

I once thought that Now and Then and the other resident trolls were just that but perhaps they do not take their direction from Soros and MoreOn.org but it could be the Lubyanka. That being said, they are still just useful idiots.

SteveB/Colorado @ 19:

...Reminds me of growing up in the ’60s when the danger then was a “commie under every bed.” Then there was that great missile gap “problem” that JFK got suckered into.

Another hippie or something from Co. Let me guess, Boulder? I am going to lump you in with N & T, unless you are careful. You have it backwards, JFK did not get suckered, the data was skewed to show that the USSR was much stronger than publicized and he used to to inflate our forces. That suckering probably staved off WWIII.

Now for the Commie under every bed. It turns out it was every other bed. Sen. McCarthy was a lot of things. A drunk and he had other issues but the damnable thing for you Lefties is that he was right. The USSR and Cuba had active programs running inside the USA. So, at least get your facts right.

Libertyship46 @ 29:

...The only time liberals and Democrats will admit that they were wrong and George W. Bush was right is when tel Aviv disappears in one giant nuclear fireball.

Right next door is Yafo (Jaffa) which is an Arab/Palestinian city. The blast will take out many kindred souls of the Palis. Too frakkin' bad.

Poor Citizen @ 35:

America has been hated overseas? Michael must be kidding! I have been going overseas for almost 40 years...

Actually, I too have traveled extensively around the world and find that most people do like Americans, whether they agree with the current regime's foreign policy or not. If you are not liked, maybe that says more about you than....

Just sayin', is all.

We have various outer foes lining up and plotting to try and take their shot. Also, the current pResident, BHO, The Won of The 0bamanation refuses to do anything that is not siding with our sworn enemies. Fer Heaven's sake, what does that make him? I mena, it just follows.
