		<description>Michael,

For you ....

US to Prepare Retaliatory Military Attack Plans on Iran

Following the visit to Washington DC by various Israeli officials, ***** (omitted) understands that
President Bush has ordered the Pentagon to come up with new options on preventing A) Iranian fast-boat attacks on US naval ships and cargo/container ships. B) IF the Iranians are ‘successful’ in attacking a ship, Bush has ordered the Pentagon to come up with the appropriate retaliation.
Meanwhile, as a second US aircraft carrier steamed into the Persian Gulf, the Pentagon in response to Bush’s order, has ordered military commanders to develop new options for attacking Iran.
According to the report, the planning was being driven by what one officer called the &quot;increasingly hostile role&quot; Iran is playing in Iraq - smuggling weapons into Iraq for use against American troops.
Targets would include everything from the plants where weapons are made to the headquarters of the organization known as the Quds Force which directs operations in Iraq.
----in response to any US attack on Iran, Pres Bush would immediately order SPR supplies to be released mush as his father did in the run-up to the first Gulf War. Crude actually topped out well before the first Gulf War started. Interesting to note that Bush has been asked about the SPR and why does the US govt continue to add to it supplies – in fact the Bush admin wants to increase its capacity to over 1bln barrels.
----in fact the merchant ship that fired warning shots last week in response to Iranian fast-boat provocation, shows that there has been to a degree an increase in the level of the US response. No longer will the US simply allow Iranian fast-boats to threaten and move within 100yds (from what we understand that is the “line not to be crossed”) of a US guarded ship or a US naval ship. If the Iranians cross that line, an outstanding order is in place to fire to remove the threat. There is not one country in the Mideast at this time that would criticize the US for taking such defensive measures. And every American remembers the USS Cole.
**** (again omitted) has discussed previously the last major confrontation with Iran in 1986 in what was dubbed “Operation Praying Mantis” by President Reagan. This attack came in response to the US Naval ship almost being sunk by one of Iran’s mines in the Persian Gulf. On April 14, 1988 the guided missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts stuck a mine and almost sunk. Ominously analogous to what happened last week, the Roberts was protecting convoys as part of “Operation Earnest Will”. The US naval attack response was the largest surface naval attack by the US since WWII. It destroyed Iranian oil platforms and bases.

Net /net: while the world focuses on $120 oil and an accelerating US recession, it may appear that Iran has slipped somewhat to the back pages. Well, not for people who think of such matters for a living…
