Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness Remastered on Vinyl for $73.99

Thursday, November 22nd, 2012 - by PJ Lifestyle Music

via Amazon.com: Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness: The Smashing Pumpkins: Music.

Emotionally over-the-top pop extravaganzas like the string-swelling “Tonight Tonight,” the Metallica-influenced alternative rock of “Zero,” the techno via new wave of “1979″–the 28 songs on this swell two-disc album are as eclectic as their themes are epic and ambitious. Billy Corgan’s thin whine isn’t much of an instrument, but he makes the most of it by writing smart songs that take emotional chances that more-typical alt rockers would deem uncool. Pessimistic and feeling trapped but still wanting to believe in love, in a future, in something–this is the sound of Gen X at the millennium, with all the self-indulgence and power that would suggest. –David Cantwell

Product Description

MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS is being released in multiple physical and digital configurations, including an expanded 5CD+DVD Deluxe Box Set (also available digitally) and the remastered original album in 4LP Vinyl, 2CD, and digital formats. The Deluxe Box Set’s 5 CDs include 64 bonus tracks of previously unreleased material or alternate versions of MELLON COLLIE era songs, and its DVD features a live show filmed at the Brixton Academy, London (1996) and bonus performances from the German music television show Rockpalast (1996). It all comes housed in a 12 x 12 lift-top box with magnetic closure, reimagined cover art and velvet-lined disc holder. The package includes 2 books containing personal notes, lyrics, new collage artwork, plus a Decoupage kit for creating your own scenes from the MELLON COLLIE universe. The bonus content and special features were curated from the band’s archives by CORGAN, and have been painstakingly remastered for the first time from the original master tapes by Bob Ludwig.

Originally released October 24, 1995, MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS would debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified 9x platinum by the RIAA. It yielded major hits like “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” the band’s unlikely first Top 40 hit the exquisite “1979″ and epic “Tonight, Tonight” as well as a thoroughly inspired series of videos. Produced by BILLY CORGAN, Flood and Alan Moulder, the album would also earn a Grammy Award (1996 Best Hard Rock Performance for “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”) as well as seven nominations. Beyond the more obvious hits, though, MELLON COLLIE is a song cycle of unusual depth and considerable range. It is a collection of stunningly beautiful moments when everything lined up–a moment in time that’s still here to be treasured.

What the Heck is ‘Gangnam Style’?

Friday, September 28th, 2012 - by PJ Lifestyle Music

via Psy returns to Korea a hero as ‘Gangnam Style’ tops 300M views on YouTube – National TV | Examiner.com.

Psy of “Gangnam Style” fame returned to South Korea earlier this week, but his impact is still being felt on American TV and pop culture. A funny office bit aired on “Chelsea Lately” and “Today” ran a segment on September 27 about Psy’s triumphant return to his homeland. On Friday, Psy tweeted that “Gangnam Style” has topped 300M views on YouTube. It’s all great news for the unlikely rapper who continues to take America and the world by storm.

Psy returned to Korea as a conquering hero. Back on his home turf, he immediately hit the ground running and performed “Gangnam Style” to a packed college campus. In a press conference, Psy said that America was very good to him. “Even if they didn’t know the lyrics, they just danced,” he explained on Thursday. Matt Lauer stated in a “Today” segment, “We’re looking forward to having Psy back on the Plaza at his earliest convenience.”

via PSY’s hit ‘Gangnam Style’ pokes fun at a real South Korean place – Chicago Sun-Times.

Gangnam is the most coveted address in Korea, but less than two generations ago it was little more than some forlorn homes surrounded by flat farmland and drainage ditches.

The district of Gangnam, which literally means “south of the river,” is about half the size of Manhattan. About 1 percent of Seoul’s population lives there, but many of its residents are very rich. The average Gangnam apartment costs about $716,000, a sum that would take an average South Korean household 18 years to earn.

As the price of high-rise apartments skyrocketed during a real estate investment frenzy in the early 2000s, landowners and speculators became wealthy practically overnight.

The notion that Gangnam residents have risen not by following the traditional South Korean virtues of hard work and sacrifice, but simply by living on a coveted piece of geography, irks many. The neighborhood’s residents are seen by some as monopolizing the country’s best education opportunities, the best cultural offerings and the best infrastructure, while spending big on foreign luxury goods to highlight their wealth.

Some of the Lyrics translated:

A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensible girl like that

I’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy

Interesting… Not the usual pop music sentiment…

Fiona Apple: ‘I Had Really Bad Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder’

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012 - by PJ Lifestyle Music

via Fiona Apple Opens Up About Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Battle – Spinner.

Just looking a Fiona Apple will tell you two things: She’s uniquely beautiful and probably going through some serious crap. The singer recently spoke to Elle (quote via Yahoo!) about her battle with mental illness, specifically obsessive-compulsive disorder.

“I had really bad obsessive-compulsive disorder,” Apple said, admitting to battling the condition before seeking professional help. “At its worst, I was compelled to leave my house at three o’clock in the morning and go out in the alley because I just knew that the paper-towel roll I threw in the recycling bin was uncomfortable, like it was lying the wrong way, and I would be down in the garbage.”

Donna Summer: ‘Heaven Knows’

Thursday, May 17th, 2012 - by PJ Lifestyle Music

Donna Summer passed away at the age of 63

Heaven knows it’s not the way it should be
Heaven knows it’ s not the way it could be
Don’t you know there’s no need to leave
Heaven knows I never want to leave you
Heaven knows I only want to please you
Don’t you know love is what I need
Down inside, don’t get caught with foolish pride
Blow the other things aside, its only you and me
Believe in us, we were always meant to be
