John Danaher: Will robots replace prostitutes?

If so, would that be a victory for oppressed women, or another loss of honest work to automation?

I vote for for latter.

I suppose this gives "rise of the machines" all new meaning.

Here in NV we have legal prostitution in licensed brothels everywhere EXCEPT (where we need it most) in Clark County/Las Vegas & Washoe County/Reno. The legal brothels are regularly inspected & the working girls get very frequent health screenings. This has drastically reduced the underage prostitution problems, pimp problems & lowered STD rates in those areas. Here in Las Vegas (where it's illegal), both the underage prostitution & pimp problems are SEVERE!! "Hypocrite Harry" asked & was granted permission to address the NV State Legislature in early 2011 (shortly AFTER he was re-elected in 2010). His "topic?...repealing the legal prostitution laws!! Talk about a "war on women"!! Ole Hypocrite Harry's 2010 campaign ads featured his "tear jerking" account of "growing up poor in Searchlight"...so poor...his Mother had to take in laundry from the local brothel "to make ends meet". Flash forward to 2011 & the occupation that put food on the table while he was growing up needs to be banned, when he knows full well that numerous small towns in NV derive their ONLY reliable income from brothel taxes!! HYPOCRITE INDEED!! Does he want entire counties on welfare?...apparently so. I guess Harry thinks all the addicted, raped & held captive teenagers here in Las Vegas have a better life than the sex workers on the Bunny Ranch. FACTOID: Now the sex workers have Obamacare, in addition to working in a safe environment. So now you have ONE EXAMPLE of satisfied Obamacare customers. Previously, (in an act of supreme stupidity) insurance companies lumped legal sex workers in with the illegal ones & refused to insure any of them...can't imagine why they turned down these successful & willing to pay customers...not very capitalistic of them!!

Disgusting. The main result would be further emasculating men and encouraging a permanent irresponsible adolescent mindset, not to mention a further loss of respect for women - and a faster descent into demographic winter.

You are assuming only men will use these services. Ever hear of a gigolo?

I thought prostitutes were robots, an emotionally detached object providing service.

I would want an assortment. There's your Bridgett Bardobot, your Marilyn Monrobot, and your Gwenithe Paltrobot. I doubt, however if the Cherbot or the Barbra Streisandbot would get much use.

I'll wait until there's a real Star Trek TNG-type holodeck.

Odd you should mention that; I've never heard a discussion of the ramifications of that technology. For example, would any actions there have a repercussions in the real world? If not, this might be a way for serial killers and child molesters, to get their freak on, with out any actual harm.

That was one aspect of the 24th century none of Star Trek's writers ever liked to bring up: are we really to believe holodecks would only ever be used for morally acceptable or even tolerable purposes? A common saying right now is that "The internet is for porn." Deep Space Nine in particular hinted that in the future, this has become "The holodecks are for sex." There was apparently some kind of law against making simulations of real people for this kind of thing without their consent, but it was also apparently nearly impossible to enforce. (Quark illegally tried to make a holo-simulation of Kira Nerys for one of his filthier-minded customers and failed, but Vic Fontaine successfully made a simulation of her for Odo to practice dating later on.)

What's to stop a major pervert from creating a simulation of Molly O'Brien to rape and torture? Aside from Star Trek's usually being a family-friendly show, I mean.

If the holodeck is not reality but an enhanced imagination experience, then being a murderer on the holodeck is equivalent to reading a first-person murder story. Sex on the holodeck would be an enhanced version of reading porn. No harm, as Mike G said, so no foul.
Many of us would hate to explain our dreams. Same thing.

I've been married 26 years. I see our life together as a romance and a partnership, not in the light you seem to be using.

Of course it is a romance and partnership. I give you permission to relax every now and then.

Hey, did you make sure the house was taken care of? How about her teeth, car, and food on the table. Perhaps, you bought a big diamond ring once for her... Don't worry MT Geoff, we all pay one way, or another.

I like to pay.

According to "The Next Generation", Data was/will be fully equipped and had/will have a mutually joyful affair with Tasha, the security officer.
We have the ancestor of Data's cat Spot right now.

He wasn't just fully equipped. He was also fully functional!

*ahem*

Didn't Data have a hologram of Tasha that was used during the episode where he was slated to be turned over to Star Fleet as nothing more than a machine?

Yep. Those would be the episodes "The Naked Now" and "The Measure Of A Man" respectively from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

People turn to prostitutes for a number of reasons. For example, most people want full body contact and a robot could likely simulate that very well. People may want their egos stroked and a robot could be programmed for that purpose.
Sometimes people turn to prostitutes from loneliness linked with sexual desire. I dunno how much help a robot would be for that.
I have very mixed feelings about commercial sex. I can imagine it being therapeutic in the right circumstances and demeaning in others. At least robot sex would be free of the issues of adultery and fornication. I can imagine robot sex becoming a serious issue in a relationship if it interferes with the closeness of the couple.

You still have the problem of what the Christians call Onanism, rather serious in Judaism. Of course, condoms have the same issue.

Generally speaking, Christian churches now condone "enjoying yourself", as it were.
In a Bible class, the instructor said that Onan's sin was not the spilling of his seed but his refusal to meet his obligation to his brother through his brother's widow. In other words, he was struck dead for not doing what we'd expect him to be struck dead for doing now.

A delightfully frightening novel is Calder's "Dead Girls":
The Human League's campaign of terror has quarantined the UK.
A virus from top-line Cartier sex dolls has begun infecting teen girls,
turning them into... something else...

competition usually leads to improved quality. just look at women's artificial 'man devices'. been using them for decades, but those same women will make fun of guys for wanting similar artificial woman devices(awd's).

the Japanese look like they lead the pack in their robotic development. some are quite cute, lifelike and capable of amazing stuff. let's face it, western women have become very 'complicated'. false accusations/rumor can ruin any man, unwanted pregnancy, c.s., alimony forever, pain of divorce, the list is long. this is obviously a growth market. wonder if you can trade them in for a better model in a couple years? hmmm. 2nd hand market potential? that's right out of the Star Trek movie. that's where r2d2 was first encountered. life follows sci fi, again. 'fascinating'

The Idoru (lifelike Japanese love dolls) have their own 'love hotels' and centerfold magazine. Perhaps that's why a third of the young don't even want to date, much less all the messy stuff.

We are having a horse-and-cart or chicken-and-egg problem here. How much of the disengagement of young men is because porn and games are available and how much are porn and games available because young men are disengaging, creating a market? I dunno.
