5 ‘Wolverine Vs.’ Battles I’d Pay To See in a Theater

He's the best at what he does. And what he does should be in IMAX 3D.

Wolverine vs. The Hulk

Wolverine made his first appearance in “The Incredible Hulk #181.”

He looked a little different then:

"The World's First and Greatest Canadian Super Hero."

“The World’s First and Greatest Canadian Super Hero.”

Since his first appearance, Wolverine and the Hulk have squared off over and over again.

And yeah, I know they faced off in “Hulk vs.” but that was animation.

I want to see this:

Come on, why does it have to be non-stop violence all the time? How about a movie with actual nuance? You know, something where Wolverine gets in touch with his inner child or takes up needlepoint to calm his nerves? Or Thor could see a psychiatrist about his unresolved feelings of guilt over having been born a God? Or maybe the Avengers and the Justice League could start a weekly support group where they talk about their feelings and bemoan how misunderstood they are? I know, Batman would steal that last one out from under everyone else, but all it needs is a little work!

Well, if the movie is true to the comics there could be a romance angle in this film. When Wolverine was with the Xmen he had a very serious Japanese girlfriend.Unfortunately she also happened to be the daughter of a man high up in the Yakuza, so you can guess how that ended up.

That said, the camera likes action. That's just the way the medium is. I do agree that they have gone heavy on action in the last decade or so though, particularly the freakish CGI stuff. I've read that the 1940's film makers were raised on books so they were better at plots. Today's movie makers are the second and third generation raised on movies. Each generation seems to have been more refined toward action and special effects and less on plot. The next generation will likely be even worse.

I'd like to see:

vs. Cyclops because he's a twit.
vs. Daredevil because he's a good two-shoes and for the Ben Affleck movie.
vs. Reed Richards because he's a psychotic egg-head with a god complex (check the Civil War cycle).
vs. quite a few others.

What would be epic would be a Wolverine and Punisher team up. In addition to the killing power they'd have built in conflict between Wolverine's impulsive, close up style vs. Castle's methodical planning and guns.

Wolverine vs. The Marvel Universe sounds a heck of a lot like Marvel Zombies.

Can't imagine there are many opponents left after Marvel's "All Wolverine, All the Time" stretch in the late '80s and '90s.

While it's not a "Wolverine vs. X" story, one that I'd enjoy on the big screen would be the mini-series "Havok & Wolverine". (Walt and Louise Simonson on writing, Jon J. Muth on the art (watercolor with a bit of oil)). Arguably more of a road or buddy movie than a superhero one.

The basic premise starts with the 2 of them on vacation in Mexico. Whoever uses their powers first has to buy the beer for the rest of the trip...

As I recall it didn't work out too well for Toni - but at least she went out with a bang.
