Vertigo is Now the Official 'Best Film of All Time'

After exactly half a century atop Sight and Sound magazine’s poll of the Top 50 Films of All Time, Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” has been shoved aside by the 846 “critics, programmers and distributors” (not including me) around the world who participated. The new champ is Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” which won by a decisive 34 votes after coming in at No. 2 in the last poll ten years ago by a five-vote margin — and didn’t even turn up in the once-a-decade poll until 1982.
