Rachel Dratch Isn't 'Too Ugly,' She's Just Not That Funny

Torie Bosch at Slate has a post on the SNL comedian asking “Is Rachel Dratch too ugly for Hollywood?” She concludes in the negative, rebutting Dodai Stewart at Jezebel:

Delightful as Dratch is in interviews and in her book, there is something uncomfortable about this framing. If we accept the premise, that Dratch hasn’t cracked Hollywood because she isn’t good-looking enough, then there would seem to be a feminist obligation to support her, to buy all her DVDs, go to her movies on opening night, protest the studio heads who reject her. Indeed, on Jezebel last week, Dodai Stewart was outraged on Dratch’s behalf: In a post titled “Hollywood Thinks Rachel Dratch Is a Troll (But if She Were a Dude, She’d Have Her Own Show),” Stewart demanded, “where is Rachel Dratch’s Garry Shandling/Larry David-esque TV show?”

But was Dratch really a victim of Hollywood’s insane beauty standards? What if her particular brand of acting—and she has admitted that she is more a character actor—just isn’t right for leading-lady-dom? Am I betraying feminism if I say that I’m just not a huge Rachel Dratch fan? She seems like a lovely person. Girl Walks Into a Bar’s discussion of her unexpected, late-in-life pregnancy is funny and honest and poignant. I’d love to get drinks with her. But as much as I strive to support smart, funny women on TV and in the movies, Dratch’s work doesn’t appeal to me.

Have “troll” women ever had a problem getting their own TV shows?

Rosie O’Donnell embraces her inner internet Troll on The View. Here she is on the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks:

HASSELBECK: Do you believe that the government had anything to do with the attack of 9/11? Do you believe in a conspiracy in terms of the attack of 9/11?

O’DONNELL: No. But I do believe the first time in history that fire has ever melted steel. I do believe that it defies physics for the World Trade Center Tower Seven, building seven, which collapsed in on itself, it is impossible for a building to fall the way it fell without explosives being involved, World Trade Center Seven. World Trade Center one and Two got hit by planes. Seven, miraculously, for the first time in history, steel was melted by fire. It is physically impossible.

HASSELBECK: And who do you think is responsible for that?

O’DONNELL: I have no idea. But to say that we don’t know it was imploded, that there was implosion in the demolition, is beyond ignorant. Look at the film. Get a physics expert here from Yale, from Harvard. Pick the school. It defies reason.

Roseanne on Israel as the New York Post reported:

“Israel is a NAZI state,” she blogged with capital letters on her Web site. And on her Jan. 6 talk show on radio station KCAA-AM in San Bernardino, Calif., she blasted conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg‘s “right-wing Israel uber alles crap.” Roseanne, who is Jewish, also denounced “warmongering American rabbis . . . who are enriching themselves on weapon sales.” She said that pro-Israel Christian evangelicals believe, “The faster every Jew in Israel dies, the faster the evangelicals mistakenly believe that their idea of Jesus will return.” At one point she proclaimed, “I hate everybody, I hope the whole world blows itself up!” She ended her show with her own peace plan; “Israel has enough money to pay each and every Palestinian to not shoot at them.” But 33 seconds later she had moved on, saying, “I gotta lose some weight, my hips ache.”
