ONWARD, CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS: Westerners join Iraqi Christian militia to fight Islamic State. “Saint Michael, the archangel of battle, is tattooed across the back of a U.S. army veteran who recently returned to Iraq and joined a Christian militia fighting Islamic State in what he sees as a biblical war between good and evil.”

There are more people like this in the West than is generally appreciated. It will be interesting to see what happens if they become energized.

UPDATE: One should remember that, like Islam, Christianity comes in many flavors, not all of them peaceful. As I’ve mentioned before, my University of Tennessee colleague Rosalind Hackett thinks that militant Christianity, not Islam, will be the religious hallmark of the 21st Century. I’m in no position to predict, but it does seem plausible that conditions for such a resurgence are coming together.
