VERY Well written, sir.

I cannot help but agree with the vast majority of your comments, RE the tragic and sad, yet so agonizingly and unfortunately necessary bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I already knew much of this information, though I admit I could not have written it down in such a succinct and excellent manner. (I admit to being a WWII buff.)

I guess the education system of the USA has faltered somewhat since the 1960's and early '70's, when I lived in Phoenix Arizona.
(Which arguably, does give me some small prejudice in this debate, due to the nasty events of Sunday, Dec 7, 1941...)

Too few people today seem to know the facts about the 2 great and sad wars...

Albeit, about half my education does come from having resided in Ontario, Canada, since 1974.

May I ask: Why do so few Americans today, in positions of public fame, not know of the anguishing decisions the President Truman had to make?
(A decision he had not signed on for, as he inherited the Presidency, he did not choose it. Until they told him the facts, he was uninformed regarding most of the details at hand...)

Clearly, you have taken up your share of the responsibility in passing the torch to a new generation. Thank you, sir. A job well done, indeed.

One hopes, that America will come through it's current trials, and emerge, again, in the end, united and able. The current political squabblings, make an outside observer feel sad, although, in my case, having family still in the US, I cannot honestly call myself an outside observer.

Recall, being a Patriot matters.
Merely being a Democrat or a Republican (or even some other party) does not automatically make you right or wrong, evil or good. It is how you meet the needs of the Republic, and the needs of your fellow citizens. Yes, I admit to paraphrasing JFK.

Thank you for your time and attention in this matter.

Bill,

This is the best thing you have ever written. And your video of it is simply harrowing. If American civilization was healthy, it would be required viewing and reading in almost every classroom in the country.

(btw, you have a typo in the last para.)

I'm very late to the party on this one (since I didn't watch Jon Stewart last year, I missed this whole go-round), but I want to tell you how much I appreciate meeting someone else who, in the words of historian Paul Fussell, says "Thank God for the Atom Bomb." I've often blogged about my Mom's experiences as a prisoner in a Japanese concentration camp in Java, and how her survival, and my eventual creation, were entirely dependent on Truman's decision.

Pardon me for cluttering your post with links to my own site, but they are on point:

Great article, the one thing I would want to bring up though is the Abe Lincoln reference.

After reading Thomas J DiLorenzo's "The Real Lincoln", which goes into detail about the Lincoln myth, I question the carry over from the Civil War to WW2. Where the Japanese were aggressive militarily, the South was seceding to form it's own nation, and as we have all learned that Lincoln had to "preserve the Union" by force, it seems to be too different to form an analogy. I'm interested in your opinion on that.

By the way, I'm a fan of Afterburner and the work you do at PJTV.

My uncle, John L. Woods, who has since deceased would have been one of those 19 year olds to land on Japan's shores. I thank God for the men who carried out the atomic bombings. Their courage lead to my uncle's career of 40+ years of teaching and scouting. Hundreds of young people crossed my uncle's path and are better for it!!

Not all of generation X has forgotten or refused to learn our proud, noble American history.

Thank you, sir. Perfectly stated and informative. And sadly, none of this is being taught in history classes (not even mine which were 20 years ago!)

Excellent essay, another one out of the park!

Lissa, in your defense as a pedantic, fat-headed sophomore (Latin or Greek for wise fool, I forget which), most of this information was not widely known when you were 15 years old. Residual security classifications and that odd, sanitized version of the war prevented this from being widely known.

Shortly after making an ass of himself, Jon Stewart apologized. How shortly after? A day? A commercial break? The length of time it took for David Letterman to make his anaemic "apology"?

Please correct "four" to "five" in the preceding comment.

I really don't want to imitate the Spanish Inquisition.
