“would the US and ultimately the world be worse off with fewer NFL teams, fewer NHL teams, fewer NBA teams, and fewer teams in the major leagues of baseball?”

As long as there are cities, counties and states willing to shoulder the costs for the “prestige” of a big league sports franchise (and show no embarrassment at looting the taxpayers to do so) this is a moot point.
