It is difficult for people like Ms. Goldberg, who primarily self-identify as members of a group rather than as an individuals, to separate or even slightly distance themselves from that group identity. For people like Ms. Goldberg, who have made their reputation as a “spokesperson” or “voice” for a particular group, it’s not going to happen. Ms. Goldberg will never bite the hand that feeds, even though that’s the hand that identifies her as a “black comedian” rather than a comedian. (Although it is her own fault that she’s not that funny.) She’s comfortable hiding behind the stereotypes, she looooves them, they validate her. Fortunately, she’s also a walking advertisement for the cognitive dissonance and rhetorical incoherence that results from racial and other irrelevant group identification.
