Israel Starts Ground Invasion

July 17th, 2014 - 1:03 pm

“IDF ground forces began to move into the Gaza Strip on Thursday evening, the prime minister’s office confirmed,”  The Jerusalem Post reports, as today’s news cycle accelerates into overdrive:

The purpose of the operation was  to destroy the Gazan terror tunnels leading to Israel, according to a statement released by the prime minister’s office.

“Israel is committed to act to protect its citizens. The operation will continue until its goals are reached: To bring quiet to the citizens of Israel for a long period of time, and to seriously harm Hamas and other terrorist organizations’ infrastructure in the Gaza Strip,” the statement read.

Prior to the commencement of the ground invasion, the IDF launched a massive wave of combined air and artillery strikes on Thursday night.

The IDF said that the operation will involve infantry, engineering corps, and tank units combined with air force and naval support and intelligence.

Palestinian sources said strikes occurred up and down the Strip, adding that one strike targeted a motorcycle apparently carrying members of a rocket launching cell on their way to an attack on
Israel.

At around 10:00 p.m. rocket sirens sounded in the Tel Aviv area, and in the Shfela. Iron Dome made a number of interceptions in the Tel Aviv area.

I’m reserving judgement on this story until Ezra Klein’s GE-sponsored JuiceVox Mafia tells me what to think about it:

"Yes, Gaza militants hide rockets in schools, but Israel doesn't have to bomb them"...

Oh, really? How else do you propose to make the rockets stop?

There is precedent in war for warning the enemy that you're about to strike. Israel takes it to absurd lengths -- showering an area with leaflets, robo-calling and texting every cell phone on the block, even using a specially-developed type of "knocking" bomb to announce that the next one will be for real.

But sooner or later, even Israel reaches the limits of how protective it can be of the enemy's noncombatants... particularly when they're being used as human shields. (And please remember the explicit relationship between the Hamas terrorists and the human shields; the latter VOTED for the former.)

May G-d protect the soldiers who have started the IDF ground operation in Gaza. May they be successful and safely return.

The IDF had no choice other then to put boots on the ground in Gaza. The cowards of Hamas use their women and children to hide behind as they continue to fire rockets into Israel. The citizens of Gaza voted for the government they have which includes a know terrorist group, Hamas" as part of a coalition government. In essence they voted for war. Now they have war. Israel should continue their ground assault until every single Hamas Islamic terrorist murderer is dead, the rocket launching sites are destroyed and all the tunnels are destroyed. Although to be honest if I were Israel I'd leave a few tunnels alone but mine then with hidden mines and install hidden cameras and then wait for some Hamas terrorists to use them.

“Here’s the difference between us,” explains the Israeli prime minister. “We’re using missile defense to protect our civilians, and they’re using their civilians to protect their missiles"...To deliberately wage war so that your own people can be telegenically killed is indeed moral and tactical insanity."

"This is a world in which the Munich massacre is a movie and the murder of Klinghoffer is an opera...(and the stupidity/naiveté of Rachel Corrie is a play)..."

Well it's about time; they certainly knocked long enough.

All you guys cheering and offering encouragement, asymetric is not fun. I don't care if you roll in in the best tanks and amoured personnel carriers. Having body armour or even armoured underwear isn't going to protect you. You face an enemy that's had years to prepare for you and knows exactly how you fight. Waiting for you is landmines, IEDs, suicide bombers, booby traps and miles of hidden tunnels. The enemy can and will easily show up behind you with everything from platoon size units to single snipers. Death waits for you from every direction 24/7. The one thing you have to remember is that this enemy doesn't fear death instead embraces it. They don't care if ten die to get you, or one hundred die or even one thousand.

Greetings:

Back during my all-expense-paid tour of somewhat sunny Southeast Asia, my favorite Platoon Sergeant used to like to remind us all of a statue of a helmeted infantryman with his rucksack and rifle at the Infantry Training Center at Fort Dix, New Jersey. "The name of the statue was "The Ultimate Weapon", he would intone and then continue with, "In this business you don't have nothing until some 20 year old with a long rifle tells you you have it."

Yes, the IJN fleet contains the aircraft carriers that attacked Pearl, but the US doesn't need to sink them.

Yes, James Earl Ray shot Martin Luther King, Jr., but the justice system doesn't need to apprehend him.

Yes, the Confederacy owns slaves, but the Union doesn't have to free them.

About time! Don't stop until you've rooted out all the filth there is to find. Stop just short of a totally scorched Gaza. If it were me in charge I'd make it uninhabitable. Turn about is fair play is it not? Isn't that what hamas would do to Israel given the means?

Do unto them before they undo you.

With all due respect to Israel, tunnels are not the problem, people are the problem. El Al knows about this in screening passengers, how can IDF pretend not to know it in a major war? Well, maybe that's exactly what IDF is doing - pretending. But I wish they would stop pretending and get serious.

I read this comment 3 or 4 times and it still didn't make any sense whatsoever.

What? A ground invasion isn't serious? What is serious to you? Nuking Gaza?

Yeah. Sure. That's a smart move.

I'm not making this stuff up about El Al y'know. If a ground invasion just goes in whooping and hollering and throwing empty beer cans in the gutter and blasting tunnels, it won't have done a thing. You want me to say it? They have to create a lot more human casualities. Geez, you have to explain everything to some people.

Debka suggests the "tunnels" involved are the reinforced bunkers under the hospitals and central Gaza city. Maybe. But why not just blast them? Are they really going to go, shoo out everybody inside, then blast the tunnels, and go home?

Well, Israel seems to be taking young Ezra's advice. Instead of bombing the rocket sites, they are going to drive up and destroy them in person. How could he object?

One of the times I was in Israel I brought home a bumper sticker that read, "Don't worry America, Israel has your back". Never truer than right now.

I suspect the new bumper sticker is "America, Get Obama off our Back"
