Blue on Blue: When the Bill Comes Due

“Police Probe Threatening ’1 Percent’ Graffiti Left On Atherton Homes,” KPIX, the CBS San Francisco Bay Area affiliate reports:

Vandals have targeted one of the Bay Area’s wealthiest communities and their handiwork has gotten the attention of the FBI.

Last Sunday, multi-million dollar homes in Atherton had offensive graffiti sprayed on them. The graffiti was found on walls, fences and even a car.

Many of the messages said “F*** the 1%,” a reference to the income inequality between the top one percent of Americans and the rest of the population.

“It’s terrible,” said one neighbor who identified herself as Diane. “Yeah, it’s a terrible thing to do and to be here in town.”

“We go out and collect evidence and interview neighbors,” said Atherton Police Lt. Joe Wade. “We look for anything we can to lead us to the person who did this.”

One of the writings had a more threatening tone: “kill people.”

Neighbors are on the fence about who did it: Occupy protesters, gang members or teens with time to kill.”

And this report comes on top of a group of far left protesters showing up last month at the Berkeley doorstep of a self-driving car engineer who works for Google, which is more than a little on the left itself.

Certainly the far left Occupy movement did much to promote the concept of the wealthy has the eeeeeeevil “One Percent,” a phrase with chilling historical overtones, despite the fact that the bulk of the “One Percent” the urban-oriented Occupy movement protested against were their fellow Democrats. (Such as Hillary and Pelosi supporter Tom Perkins.) Particularly in wealthy Bay Area-located Atherton, where Obama fundraised in last year, with an amusing postscript:

It’s not unusual for political candidates to drop by the exclusive town of Atherton on the Peninsula for fundraisers. But Atherton is sending out bills to cover the expense of President Barack Obama’s visit earlier this month.

The town of Atherton wants $8,100 in reimbursement for planning and providing security for two events the president attended. The amount pales by comparison to the $32,000 cost to attend one of those events. But the question is whether taxpayers should be stuck with the tab.

This is not the first time that Atherton has sent out bills to cover expenses when a dignitary comes to town, but the response is always the same.

“It’s great to have a dignitary like that coming through your community, you should be welcoming their visit as opposed to requesting reimbursement, and I’m sorry, but no, we’re not going to reimburse you for the expense,” Atherton Town Manager George Rodericks said.

Atherton has wealthy residents living on spacious estates, often behind walls and gates. Last year, they gave almost $6.5 million to political causes, parties and candidates.

This isn’t to say there’s any correlation between the two stories, other than by supporting Mr. Obama, wealthy Atherton tacitly signs off on protest movements such as Occupy. (As journalist Henry Hazlitt wrote in 1966, “The whole gospel of Karl Marx can be summed up in a single sentence: Hate the man who is better off than you are.”) They won’t get paid directly by Mr. Obama, but the bill has come due, nonetheless.
