It was based on a 1935 novel by Humphrey Cobb, which took its title from a poem by Thomas Gray that concluded &amp;#8220;The paths of glory lead but to the grave.&amp;#8221; Kubrick and his co-writers Jim Thompson, and Calder Willingham had crafted a script that enticed both United Artists to put up the money to produce it and Kirk Douglas to star in the film.
