Charles Krauthammer delivered a knockout punch of a soundbite on Tuesday’s Fox News All-Stars:

Look, I don’t think it’s a communication problem. This is not Cool Hand Luke. This is a reality problem. No matter what Obama said, no matter how he spun it, if he used the phrase “bump in the road” or “blip” or whatever, it wouldn’t make any difference in the world. It’s the fact that we have historically high unemployment and it is staying there.

With Reagan you had a really deep recession like the one that we have just had. But we had this remarkable snap back. We had 6, 7 percent growth. Even though we had high unemployment on Election Day 1984, everybody had a sense that we were in recovery, and you could, with a straight face, run an ad saying: It’s morning in America.

You can’t now. It’s dusk in America. It’s evening in America. It’s midnight in America. But it’s not morning in America. That’s why no matter what he says, it’s not going to make any difference.

And speaking of which, note this item at The Hill: “AEP says it will close five coal plants to comply with EPA regs:”

Utility giant American Electric Power said Thursday that it will shut down five coal-fired power plants and spend billions of dollars to comply with a series of pending Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

The company’s dramatic plan to comply with the regulations could give Republicans and moderate Democrats ammunition in their ongoing fight against EPA’s efforts to impose new regulations aimed at limiting greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants including mercury and arsenic.

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) immediately pounced on AEP’s announcement.

“This is a perfect example of the EPA implementing rules and regulations without considering the devastating impact they may have on local economies and jobs,” Capito said.

Nobody can say that Obama hasn’t kept at least one of his campaign promises though:
