Joe Biden, Insult Comic

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog could not be reached for comment:

Vice President Joe Biden got a laugh from his audience at a Wisconsin fundraising event Thursday when he tried to rile the crowd about the economic collapse of 2008.

“We want to reward people who manufacture things in the United States, in Wisconsin, not to take them overseas to China and to other countries!” he said to a silent room at the event for Democratic gubernatorial nominee Tom Barrett, according to a White House pool report.

He continued, saying, “You’re the dullest audience I’ve ever spoken to,” at which point he got applause and laughs. “Do you realize how many jobs Wisconsin lost? It’s staggering!”

Biden’s shot follows hot on the John Lobb heels of Obama jeering his base with lines like, “There better not be an enthusiasm gap, people,” and “if people now want to take their ball and go home, that tells me folks weren’t serious in the first place.” Not to mention both men uttering stereo choruses of “Buck up.”

As James Taranto wrote last week, it’s a clear case of “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People:”

[T]he politics of insult can have a certain snob appeal. When liberal politicians talk down to ordinary Americans, it can energize snooty so-called progressives who think they’re better than everyone else. But even snooty progressives don’t like being talked down to. Because they fancy themselves superior, they probably dislike it with a special intensity. At this rate, it won’t be long before Obama’s only remaining supporter is Barack Obama.

Will being sneering remarks from the president and his veep re-energize their base to come out and vote for their surrogates in November? We’ll know soon enough.

Update: On the other hand, “Dude. I mean… just… dude.”

Incidentally, Biden’s crack about wanting to “reward people who manufacture things in the United States, in Wisconsin, not to take them overseas to China and to other countries,” doesn’t jibe with what both Biden and Obama said about outsourcing key industries there during the 2008 race.
