Audi was probably going for funny and memorable but it was too close to the truth that it appeared creepy and Orwellian.

Forget what it means or what they are trying to project, the bottom line is what do most take away after seeing this and that is : I will never by from Audi

Mock Green, But Sell Green?

That ad is complicated. Did they intend to mock the Green agenda, just before telling us that their car was the perfect Green vehicle?

I think Audi is selling to an audience that does not see the Green Police as too much. Their audience would like to enforce all of the restrictions in the ad, and would find the enforcement enjoyable. Motto: "Finally, a real enforcement program to be wished for, and a car that meets all the requirements."

Audi says "this is the perfect Green auto" after supplying a lot of pleasant enforcements to the intended buyers.

The brilliance of the ad is that it supports the views of its potential customers, while convincing the rest of us that it mocks Green policy. Everyone finds a way to like the ad.

It's a poorly done ad, because the first 50 seconds of the ad angers liberal environmentalists, who don't like their portrayal as fascist thought police, while conservatives hate the final 10 seconds of the ad, which basically tells the viewer to give in to fascism and buy an Audi.

People may remember the ad on both sides of the ideological spectrum, but for the most part they remember it because they dislike it. And unlike smaller products, where a bad ad might keep the product in your mind for an impulse purchase at the local grocery store or shopping mall, most people -- even Audi owners -- don't buy their cars on spur-of-the-moment decisions, but on a number of factors, including their general feeling about the car company. The relative fortunes of Ford vs. GM and Chrysler over the pas year following the latters' decisions to take federal bail-out money shows how much political opinions about a car company can affect a car purchase.

"Once again, we are apparently witnessing an example where an advertising agency is focusing on winning some sort of industry award instead of selling its client’s goods and services."

You're talking about the ad and Audi, aren't you?

Can you tell me which other companies have aired ads, and what were they selling?

This might actually be a very brilliant ad... but I am not certain. I would love to have been a fly on the wall at the designers conference table -

-- It's selling Green, and it is genuinely amusing. "Buy this car and you are in good with the green folk."

-- But it's being sent viral to conservatives all over the country, in that it is almost an SNL skit of the worst nightmare caricature of... well... the "Green Police". Gee, ya think the writers knew this would happen? Of course they did, they set out for that!

-- So will anti-green conservatives buy the car... for whatever reason? Is whatever mixed message presented here worth it, just to get the eyeballs on the ad (which is happening)? I'm not an ad guy, so I don't know.

But I think they have successfully pushed buttons of both sides of this contentious issue, and did so with genuine humor, creepy or not.

And as a conservative, I am happy to see it, as it does show a dystopian future that it seems a lot of people are hell-bent to bring about.

As for how it can be expected to sell cars, I leave to others.

I agree with Seppo and Lightn' Hopkins. For me, the ad said, "Escape the Stupidity, and drive a great car at the same time (instead of a Prius or Insight)."

Seppo: Exactly.

"You're good to go, sir."

But remember, we're the "authoritative" ones.

I've seen it written elswhere, but it is worth repeating, the person who leaked those climate emails is a hero. By the time it grudgingly receives MSM attention the "green" tide will have begun to recede, sans Obama's sonorous command.

Audi's approval & airing the ad are mystifying for many reasons, but I did find the ad funny.

I found the Mastercard ad, both when it was new & even now, hectoring, albeit in soft-focus images & dulcet audio. (Kinda like I find our President.) When I first saw the ad, with its close up on that little demon puppy's eyes, I blurted out "hit 'im, hit 'im now, hit him hard!" at the beleaguered, unshaven dad.

If eco-fascism comes, it will come through the soulful, baleful eyes of some baby harp seal or ET or Damien.
