The kerfuffle about the arrest of black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates showed that "racism" now applies to everyone in the same story as a black or brown person.

It may have been legitimate to examine whether the arresting officer had a history of bias, but the press questioned whether the eyewitness Lucia Whalen was racist merely for describing Gates as maybe being hispanic, when asked by the 911 operator.

A person is now racist when describing the appearance of a black person! The term "colorblind" has proceeded from a statement of hiring philosophy to an actual, physical requirement. Right out of the novel "1984" when Winston is asked "how many fingers". (If the state says there are three, then Winston must see three.)

Quip: He was black, or white, or something. I'm not saying which.
