It may have been legitimate to examine whether the arresting officer had a history of bias, but the press questioned whether the eyewitness Lucia Whalen was racist merely for <i>describing</i> Gates as maybe being hispanic, when asked by the 911 operator. A person is now racist when describing the appearance of a black person! The term "colorblind" has proceeded from a statement of hiring philosophy to an actual, physical requirement. Right out of the novel "1984" when Winston is asked "how many fingers". (If the state says there are three, then Winston must see three.) Quip: He was black, or white, or something.
