Rummy's "light footprint" meant that the number who were in harm's way was limited and when General Petraeus came up with a decent strategy, reinforcements were available. McNamara never practiced economy of force or much of anything else. And we do not even have to talk about sitting duck positions like Con Thien, Khe Sanh, Lang Vei and numerous others.
