Tom W. wrote ” ……the number of deaths per 1000 people can be higher for developed nations than in less-developed countries, despite standards of health being better in developed countries. This is because developed countries have relatively more older people, who are more likely to die in a given year, so that the overall mortality rate can be higher even if the mortality rate at any given age is lower.

I could have gone on Wikipedia and edited their entry on Mortality to prove the point that anyone can write anything in Wikipedia, and it cannot be cited as an authority.

If you look at worldwide data on mortality vs. life expectancy, you will see a clear tendency for nations with higher mortality rates to have lower life expectancies, and vice versa.

Here are the data, from the World Bank, in order of mortality rate for the year 2000:

I am sorry I don’t know how to post a scatter plot of these data, but I assure you the trend is quite obvious, that there is an inverse relationship between mortality and life expectancy.

Also, please note that the mortality rate for Iraq in 2000 was 8.8 per thousand, more than 50% higher than Iran’s 5.8 for the same year, both according to World Bank figures.
