Best argument I’ve seen for Obama not taking Hillary is he probably thought a White House with three presidents would be crowded.
Otherwise, analysis of past elections shows that when there is a close primary, taking the 2nd place candidate as VP is a winner, while not doing so, for example, is what happened to Carter in 80 (among other things).
