Greetings, Lisa! Yes, I WOULD use the word “silly” to describe a male in your situation, although I might not use such a patronizing adjective to describe a non-reporter.
I wish you well, and if I am not paying for people who risk their lives to no good purpose, all the better. (It also ticks me off when I have to pay to pull some silly Israeli thrillseeker off a moutaintop in Tibet or out of some ravine in Columbia.)
As regards Alan Johnston, it was you, not I, who made the comparison. Maybe the similarity is more obvious to you.
