I’m not sure this kind of confrontation is wise strategy on the police’s part. They seem to be giving the trouble-makers exactly what they want.
The best police strategy I ever saw for a national convention was in Philadelphia in 2000. What they did was quietly infilitrate all the protest groups months before the event, and on the first day they quickly arrested all the leaders because they knew exactly who they were. Without leadership, the protest groups were like insects without a queen. The rest of the week was quiet and protest free. They eventually camped outside the jailhouse (MILES from the convention) chanting for the release of their leaders. They had been completely defanged. It was brilliant.
