Part of what’s going on is “be careful what you wish for, you might get it”. Pension weenies have been arguing that we need to fully fund them for awhile, but now that people are paying attention, the answer is to get rid of defined-benefit pensions instead of bankrupting the state funding them.
So, the only way to make people quit paying attention and abolish pensions is to write “nothing to see here, all is well, move along” articles like Lehrer’s.
