The real challenges for Sarkozy now begin.
Can he turn around the entrenched nouveau-artistocracy in the French bureaucracy, or will they revolt out from under him when he moves away from what recieved wisdom calls ‘progressive socialism’?
Can he use this popular mandate to end the French infatuation with building barricades and going on strike and other forms of self-defeatism?
Can he muster enough statecraft to hold the country together during the violence that is sure to come from various quarters if he attempts real reform of France’s moribund economy and suicidal social system?
