As far as freedom of speech vs. freedom to publish: If Random House holds onto the book under contract, it has effectively censored Ms. Jones; she cannot publish it. If the contract does not have a release provision, she should find a lawyer who will help her free the book (without ceding the advance; Random House changed its mind and should bear the burden) and then find a publisher with more backbone.
