Sorry, but endemic misuse of this particular word is my pet linguistic peeve, and the construction “comprised of” makes my skin crawl. You may well dismiss me as another “nitwit grammar troll” (as is your right) but “these later uses are often criticized” because they are the ugly stepchildren of pretentious journalistic hacks putting on airs. Their increasing frequency in formal usage is one more symptom of our decline.
The Union comprises fifty states. Period. I feel better now.
